I am working on an O-type star map. The detailed Edenhofer dust clouds and this year the new ionized hydrogen grid allows for more detailed and realistic maps so I tried a different style for this map. Comments welcome.

NGC 6888 is why I refer to the "Crescent Nebula" in #Section31 as the "*Near* Crescent Nebula". #StarTrek #GalacticCartography #StarCharts #starmaps
Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888) in Cygnus. The interaction of multiple stellar ejections by the central star give the nebula it's shape. Narrow band data collected before moon rise this past week. Rendered so ionized Hydrogen are reds & Oxygen are blues.

Seems to be a busy day on Bluesky, so if I did a Kickstarter, like one of the following two topics.

Wondering if any professional astronomers out there can explain the "Outer Scutum-Centaurus arm". I realize that something appears in l-v diagrams and that there are a number of star formation regions in the far outer galaxy but in what way is this an arm - an extended significant structure?

Amplifying for #GalacticCartography
Later this year I'll be launching a Kickstarter to fund the Atlas of the Milky Way. This will combine Gaia DR4, masers, and infrared data from the Herschel mission to create the most detailed top down maps of the Milky Way that have ever been available.

Amplifying because I'd be interested in seeing how maps on such a scale can be set up. #GalacticCartography
It seems likely that Gaia DR4, especially when combined with other recent data sources like Hi-GAL and WISE, will allow for the first detailed and accurate maps of the local spiral structure. I am looking for some similar science fiction maps to use as inspiration. Any suggestions?

Amplifying because #galacticcartography...
Experimenting with expanding the inner Milky Way visualization to add the nearest spiral arm to the Sun. Obviously needs a lot of work still!

So here's part of my weekend work on mapping the inner galaxy. My question: can I find the inner ring that wraps around the bar described in this paper: ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2022A%26...

in Hi-GAL and masers? Answer: maybe? Green ellipse is bar and white ellipse is ring. Cyan dots: masers.

Amplifying for #GalacticCartography purposes...
Maarten Schmidt's 1957 paper "Spiral structure in the inner parts of the Galactic System derived from the hydrogen emission at 21-cm wavelength" is in ADS but is missing Plates A and B. Does anyone have those?

#GalacticCartography continues to hold a part of my attention.
Here is a very preliminary reworking of my 1 kpc map using the new Quintana association names. I only used the associations where they seem to be connected with hot star concentrations. They provide names for almost all of the concentrations except for the smaller one around Messier 6.
December 13, 2025 at 1:47 AM
Amplifying an update!

#GalacticCartography
I've done a revised version of my O-type star poster which uses Bailer-Jones distances where available. This eliminated 7 stars that are now further than 1250 pc but added 11 more.

When boreal forests burn, the whole world feels the impact. Research from Woodwell Climate has expanded our understanding of boreal fire impact.

Check out these four graphics from @cmshintani.bsky.social that shed light on the role of boreal fires in climate change:

If you want better #GalacticCartography, and have a bit of extra cash to spare, maybe drop some of that boodle on Kevin Jardine, okay?

galaxymap.org if you want to see why I make that recommendation.

Or check Kevin's account here.

Amplifying, because getting our galaxy properly mapped out for everyone interested in such is Worth Doing!

When Gaia DR3 came out, I released a web app with a zoomable, pannable and searchable map of the local galaxy.

gruze.org/dr3_app/

Now three years later, there are many new data sets (dust, star clusters, ionized hydrogen) that I could incorporate into a new map app but I would need funds for it.

This is a thing I want to see launched and put into active service.

You get a star, everyone gets a star!

NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory will collect precise data about 17 billion stars in our galaxy and nearby. That's more than twice the number of people on Earth!

With such a detailed map, scientists will better understand our home galaxy's history.
