1/2: April 12: St Zeno, born in North Africa, 4th cent. bishop of Verona, wrote over 90 surviving tracts. Here, he expels a demon from Emperor Gallienus' daughter. Gallienus ruled a century earlier, but his restoration of Verona’s walls may have got him in the legend. #MedievalSky #AncientBlueSky

Forever grateful to @allthebeset.bsky.social for driving home this truth by showing the class portrait sculptures of the Tetrarchs in comparison with an earlier emperor (might have been Gallienus, but he'll do in any case). Despite the more "primitive" look, the Tetrarchs came a half century later.

For someone supposedly writing a book on the fifth century crises of the Roman West, chapter one tumbles faster and faster into the rabbit hole of the crises of the third century. I mean, Gallienus' reign was REALLY wild. No wonder later Roman authors used it as short-hand for 'Hitting Rock Bottom'.

2. After the crises of the 3rd century a series of reforms from Gallienus to Constantine (c. 260-330) set the Empire on proper footing. This meant an overhaul of the institutional fabric, not least to support an increased army (probably c. 450,000 men c. 300 CE coming from c. 400,000 men c. 200 CE)

For the Late Roman Empire (no Late Antiquity is not the same), I'm a big fan of 260. Symbolic temporary breakdown of empire, paving the way for future regionalisation (Gaul & Oriens), Gallienus last senatorial emperor, earlier plague plus Christian persecution, ... No coincidence PLRE1 starts there.
If you had to pick exactly *one year* as the beginning of “late antiquity,” what year would you pick, and why?

Once I have a steady income again, I'm going to get hardcore into ancient coin collecting! It seems to be a relatively cheap hobby depending on what you're looking to find!

@nutedawn.bsky.social @freydalpishti.bsky.social Since we're arguing about overrated emperors, here's another topic: underrated Roman (including Byzantine) emperors.

1) Gallienus
2) Domitian
3) Michael VIII Palaiologos
4) *sigh* Constantius II
5) Phokas (not good, just not literally Satan)

#otd 214AD, Marcus Aurelius Claudius "Gothicus", aka #Claudius II, was born. He was #emperor from 268-270AD after murdering Gallienus, his predecessor, & went on to defeat both the Alemanni & the Goths.

Gallienus, for my money. “That soft but inhuman prince” as Gibbon calls him.

The strangest #Roman #column I ever did see is today's offering for #ReliefWednesday. Found at the Villa of #Gallienus at #Bovillæ, IX miles along the via #Appia, it's decorated as if wrapped around with ceiling stucco coffers, and dates to c. 130 CE. #AncientBluesky 🏺

This Aswan granite sarcophagus may reflect a C3 revolution. Emperor Gallienus stripped the senatorial aristocracy of military command, rewarding talented equestrian soldiers instead. Could this imperial gift have belonged to one of these newly powerful men? #SarcophagusSaturday #AncientBluesky 🏺

September 17, 264 CE: A veteran named Ammonianos at Karanis in Roman Egypt in the reign of Gallienus, is given an ostracon receipt that notes that he delivered an enslaved man (δοῦλος) as security for a loan (O. Mich. 3 1098, Straus, L'esclave dans l'Égypte romaine 54 2020).
