i think Balatro and its imitators have gotten more people to openly talk about the potential harm of addictive gameloops, but that kind of play style has been built into (especially commercial) indie games since the beginning - Balatro is just an evolution of that.

i wouldn't go far as to say that gameloops are inherently bad or whatever personally because that's way too broad of a statement to make but there's def a push to use whatever means in the toolbox to take people's eyes off either the same few forever games or online video in a way i don't like
