absolutely perfect use of the gameboy's memory limits: you want to get some space between you and the surprise metroid, but the hole you shot to get here has already filled with sand again. you're trapped.

The power of the gameboy's 160x144px resolution. Very different vibe from modern pixel games that show as much on screen as possible.
One of the greatest video game surprises of my childhood was finally seeing a full map of Saffron City and realizing that it was only this big, instead of the size of a massive real-life city like I'd originally assumed.

Have y’all ever seen the art in the German guide book for the gameboy’s Link’s Awakening from 1994? It’s stunning. It’s funny because this is the kind of stuff my child brain would imagine while looking at that vague Gameboy pixel art, but the modern remake is nothing like this.

i was very fortunate to grow up during the gameboy's heyday because there was nothing else like it when it first hit the market. for some reason ive just been really missing Nintendo's handheld days, it was so nice being able to play games on the go on dedicated hardware

Porygon was created to be ironic because everyone kept telling Satoshi Tajiri that Pokemon Red and Green were too late in the Gameboy's timeline and to focus on games with 3D graphics so he created Porygon, a 3D fellow in a 2D game.
