Every manicured lawn is an act of war on nature.

We call it tidy. Nature calls it ecocide.

We began filming in lockdown — just me and my sons, Sam & Zack — to help people grow something good. 🌱
It became Gardeningwell: our family garden in Co. Meath, sharing ways to garden for wildlife and hope.

Everyone’s tidying up for winter — but your “mess” might be saving wildlife.

Leaf piles + log piles = shelter for hedgehogs, frogs, insects. More on the website. 👇

Can a wildlife garden actually be easier to look after?

I’m exploring that idea in a new Gardeningwell series called Listen to the Land.

This is the first draft, and I’d really appreciate honest feedback.

What questions should this series answer?

Every native plant is a little act of climate resilience.
Irish growers are quietly restoring biodiversity one seed tray at a time — and we can support them.
Choosing native means choosing balance. 🌱

Gods I love a bit of knapweed, and these pics show why.

Also, I've started Ciarán's book "Nature's Acre" about tending to a neglected walled garden during lockdown, and it is one of the most quietly beautiful, steadying, and joyous things I've read in a long old time.

Warmly recommended:

Slow motion of sunflower seeds falling — tiny bursts of sound as they hit the table.

Just a whimsical reminder that gardening is meant to be fun — and even the quiet moments can feel full of life.

Father’s Day is coming.

If your dad has ever:

• disappeared into a greenhouse for “five minutes”
• pointed at a bird nobody else could see
• built something out of pallets
• said “that’s not a weed”

Then he’s probably one of us.

The call led to a Victorian walled garden hidden behind a wall I had passed hundreds of times without ever knowing what was there.

“What did you do about it?”

A question from my son changed the direction of my life.

GardeningWell, the walled garden, community, nature, autism — and eventually Nature’s Acre — all grew from there.

Thanks to Emma Jane Cooke and RSVP Live for telling the story.
