New Gas production can't be quickly switched on:

"Global Energy Monitor said new projects in 2025 took an average of 15 years to come online, as new oil and gasfields are increasingly found in hard-to-reach areas that can make them challenging and expensive to develop."
Why oil and gasfield timelines are growing
New projects take about three times as long to come online as they did historically, according to a new report

"But we are entering a new era of accountability. Now that climate attribution science has come of age, it’s no longer possible to hide behind the argument that a new gasfield is just a drop in the ocean."

Let's hope @albomp.bsky.social & crew feel abject shame for supporting new coal&gas projects.
876 million t CO₂ emissions from Scarborough Gas project would result in 484 heat-related deaths in Europe by 2100 & destroy millions of coral colonies.

We can finally measure the damage each new coal, gas or oil project will do to people and nature

For decades, we couldn’t trace the link between new fossil fuel projects and their damage to people and planet. But now we can.

Instead of approving a licence for the Jackdaw gasfield are there other ways to use the North Sea to cut bills, increase energy security and create clean energy storage jobs?

Granting a new gasfield licence does not guarantee energy security
Any additional emissions from a UK gasfield are incompatible with climate targets.

Now that @eddavey.libdems.org.uk has given his support to the Shell UK #Jackdaw greenhouse gas emissions project, of course the Labour government are going to approve the licence.

The Lib Dems put their middle class comfort ahead of their duty to save young people from chaos, suffering and death.

Granting a new gasfield licence does not guarantee energy security
The UK government is deciding whether to approve a licence for Jackdaw gasfield, around 250km east of Aberdeen, in the North Sea. This is being presented by supporters as part of the answer to Britain’s energy-security problem. The UK government has argued that if Britain still needs gas, then producing it domestically is preferable to imports. But there is a fundamental problem with treating new gas production as an answer to long-term energy needs especially when there are other enduring ways to use the North Sea to reduce bills, increase energy security and create jobs in the emerging sector of clean energy storage. So what role should the North Sea play as the UK moves away from extractive fossil fuels across electricity, transport, manufacturing and heating? Gas is not a future fuel. Climate science means Britain needs to reduce natural gas use (a fossil fuel that’s extracted from deep underground, often beneath the seabed) this decade. The atmosphere does not distinguish between CO₂ emitted from gas produced in the North Sea and CO₂ emitted from imported gas. All greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change. Britain’s energy system currently depends on gas for heating, electricity and industry. But there are...
