Today, @bbayles.bsky.social published new findings on cheat codes hiding in #Sega #Saturn 3D battlebot arena shooter Gebockers!

Get the lowdown on a debug mode, plus a patch to play the prerelease demo:

Under the Microscope: Hyper 3D Taisen Battle Gebockers

What does Gebockers mean? I asked a robot and got this back: ゲボッカーズ (Gebockers) is a Japanese word that is derived from “ゲボッ” (gebo), which is used to represent the sound of vomiting. ……

More "Gebockers" and "Big Nose the Cave Man" at an undetermined time tonight ET. I want to try the other characters in Gebockers and figure out their "special moves".

I found new cheat codes for an old game, *Hyper 3D Taisen Battle Gebockers * on Saturn. They show the build date, display commands, and enable debug mode.

Hyper 3D Taisen Battle Gebockers (Saturn) (1996)

1/2

Swindled by the promise of 3D in the title and the lack of any attention span, it turned out the game doesn't really have any 3D polygons, just the VDP2 rendered ground plane like this icy floor made out of frozen blocks and shallow water, with 2D sprites for pillars and the characters themselves, the aforementioned Gebockers.

This is a Virtual-On style arena 1v1 shooter between cute little rocket robots with boosters on their butts, floating Rayman hands (I'm on a roll with those lately) and round heads with googly eyes, with the current battle introducing Pal, a blue Gebocker (I'm just assuming the characters are called Gebockers since I don't know the lore, it's all in Japanese and very little can be found online) with a red V on his forehead like some kinda Gundam fella. He's currently fighting Fisher, an almost Minion looking robo with a big exhaust for a mouth and goggles (hence the Minions), rushing around like he's gonna gobble someone up.

Dontin is a yellow rocket-shaped thing with short brown hair, googly eyes and a big red smoochy mouth (no visible here), throwing exploding walnuts at a purple monk robot with a cane called Mugen as they zoom around a weird and endless pink horizon with blobs, tendrils and spikes, all gooey and pink, while a pink mountain range with tall neuron-trees rise into the purple skies.

An endless ocean with a small arena surrounded by flat orange buoys, enclosing a wavy area with some gray shells and rocks as the pink sexy robot Ray is all electrified, shooting green photon torpedoes at Ein, a gray robot in a sort of floating chair with two guns in front, looking surprised with his googly eyes, either because he's witnessing the endless watery horizon under the orange and purple aurora skies or he just realized he's a floating sentient robot built to kill. Either way, lots to ponder on.

Rocketbot Kid, a cowboy with a big hat and a sheriff badge, rootin', tootin' and shootin' his akimbo guns across the desert sands past some yellow rocks as the feline looking Catty, with her big eyes, green hair and cat ears, doing a swooshing side dodge and leaving a trail of semi-transparent Cattys in her wake.

Hyper 3D Taisen Battle Gebockers (Saturn) (1996)

2/2

Winning the battle shows our robo-heroes from the front, giving us a good look at the big lipped Dontin, looking up in the sky and flexing her Mickey Mouse gloves as a blue flashing ring starts to form around her like she's charging her powers.

Another robo-lady, the pink armored Ray with a sleek aerodynamic helmet, two yellow drone turbines to enable her to hover over the ocean and two big robo-boobs just for aesthetic reasons.

Our friendly hero Pal, raising his floating gloves in the air as he hovers above the blue, freezing wasteland.

Playing as Mugen, the wooden robo monk with a big hat and two propellers on the back, flying around cyberspace with a red grid on the floor shiny floating marbles all around, confronting the big boss Bigeye, a floating eye orb that morphs into a star-shaped floating eye orb, shooting big chunky electric orbs and using the laws of physics against you.
