Greetings #GenHour friends! How is your #genealogy, #FamilyHistory, #LocalHistory, #HouseHistory, #OnePlaceStudy, or #OneNameStudy research going this week?

I don't know if anyone will be interested, but I didn't record this as I said I would. Sadly, I won't be doing another in the future. #Genealogy #GenHour

#GenHour I'll be so glad after we go back to Standard Time this weekend.
Reminder to North American* friends: the UK has already switched their clocks back, so #AncestryHour and #GenHour will be an hour *later* to us this week than we usually see them.

Next week, after we've fallen back, we'll be in sync again.

#GenHour I hope @davelifelines.bsky.social does this talk. Now I'm on the lookout for records in my own collection (I posted one choice census enumeration in his replies already).
I'm considering writing a new talk, looking at the attitudes of certain clergymen, census enumerators and poor law officers to the less fortunate members of society and how those attitudes are expressed in the records.

The title of the talk?

Self-Righteous Judgemental Bastards

Thoughts? 😬

#GenHour Still on the to-do list: getting back to learning how to use Clooz. I want it for FAN research, for the #OnePlaceStudy, for #HouseHistory, so many things.

Tagging this question for #AncestryHour, #GenHour, and the #Genealogy feed.

#FamilyHistory
I’m a lazy amateur genealogist with what may seem like a silly question: how distant do people go when adding to their tree? My ancestors tree runs in the 1000s. I go back & forth on adding anything beyond 6th cousins coming into the present but go further than that going back.

I'll see you all next week for #AncestryHour at its usual time, or on Thursday for #GenHour at its out-of-sync timeslot.

#GenHour I soent the afternoon going through someone’s house clearance purchase. Despite being in a car boot miles away it all related to a person who’s photo archive I have just taken delivery of!

Well everything that could go wrong did go wrong at my A History of the Census Takers Chat Party last night. Hardly anyone turned up, despite registering, and some of those who did turn up were trolls intent on causing havoc. A Halloween disaster! 🎃 #Genealogy #GenHour #Ancestry #Neveragain

#GenHour due to my current project I really don’t have time to look at records. Except when I was scanning a 1937 directory and noticed my great grandparents address. They moved to Leeds at some point and now I know it was before 1937! Though my Grandad used the address for absentee voting in 1939.

#GenHour This week I made an exciting new discovery, then when I went to correlate the information with the other records I had about the family, I discovered I had already seen that record. 🤦

Double-checked all the Quaker dates, discovered a typo in a marriage date, then fixed it.
October 29, 2026 at 8:05 PM
And earlier this week I got a sneak preview of a similar type of database devoted to records from the Austrian and Hungarian Empire. It looks incredible!

Unfortunately, this database will be behind a paywall of the organization hosting it, so it won't be as widely accessible.

#GenHour Also, I regret to say, I do not like findmypast's new online tool which is supposed to help one find people on war memorials. My initial search for my study place failed, and I had to search for county, then look through the parishes until I found my place.
#OnePlaceWednesday If you use findmypast's new online tool, be prepared to find servings of AI-generated sludge riddled with errors.

Write the stories of the people in your #OnePlaceStudy yourself. Writing—no matter how tedious you may find it—is far more enjoyable than correcting computer vomit.
Findmypast has launched a new online tool making it easier to trace men commemorated on First World War memorials - and they want family historians to try it out now!

TreeLab Pro will have an annual subscription. It carries ongoing costs, including map data, cloud storage and processing, which necessitates a reasonable fee.

Importantly, everything currently on TreeLab will remain free. TreeLab Pro will be an optional upgrade.

#GenHour I really don't understand why all the big companies now feel they have to offer us AI-generated stories and summaries. Are we baby birds, only capable of eating regurgitated food? That's not an aid to research, it's an impediment.

Hi #GenHour, how has your week been?

I've been amazed with the new record databases that are popping up, thanks to the help of AI.

The one grabbing a lot of attention is: archival.name, that now has amassed >25 million records in just a few weeks. I've found a few records there myself!
archival.name: Jewish and civil records of Central and Eastern Europe
26,685,502 records in 63 collections: the Russian Empire census of 1897, vital records and censuses of Lwów, Kraków, Galicia and Central Poland, records of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Volhynia and Subcarpathia, of...
