🗃️ In Genoa a couple years ago I saw this sculpture by Bruno Catalano, which says much more about what it means to be Genoese, or "Italian" than the fake outrage of Chris Rufo and the never-ending saga of Christopher Columbus apologism.

🗃️ Happy Indigenous People's Day, and not "Evil Genocidal 15th-century Genoese Maniac Day."
Just a reminder that no one needs to claim that guy!
Given tomorrow, I must point out as I always do that the American Italian support for Columbus is proof of their stupidity because most of them are Sicilian descended and they're going to bat for a Genoese guy who was too much of a shithead for a city perverts, pedophiles, and slavers.

Good Morning Gonz! Yez I heartily second that greeting and those sentiments which are very much worth celebrating! As opposed to the ravagement caused by the drunken, hopelessly lost Genoese reprobate who shall not be named.😡 🧡🧡

This looks like a promising seminar. I've been using transcription tools on 15th century Genoese financial records and I'm interested to compare with the results of @lauramorreale.bsky.social . #medievalsky#earlymodern
Excited to report on some work I did with @sims-mss.bsky.social & some tough-to-read but very rewarding historical sources. Come hear me talk about transcription tools now at our disposal, & what is required to use them (hint: it's not computer fairy dust...) www.library.upenn.edu/events/schoe...

Nah, we're like, quite sure he was from Genoa. The whole conspiracy that he might be Spanish originated centuries after his passing, and has very lacklustre evidence behind it. Still, to call him Italian instead of Genoese is farcical. It'd be like calling Julius Caesar Italian instead of Roman.

Yeah. Genoese and devoutly Catholic as far as anyone can tell, though some people haved tried to claim his signature references the kaddish or that him speaking some degree of Catalan is proof he actually spoke Ladino.
