#Genoese
Longer day trips:

Take a boat to Rumeli Kavağı on the Bosphorus, climb up to the old Genoese castle, look out at the Black Sea.

Take a boat to the Princes' Islands, quaint and laidback.

When you're at the Hagia Sophia, don't miss Gülhane park and the Bab-i Ali (the literal "Sublime Porte").

There were no Italy at the time of CC. Columbus identified himself as Genoese, from Republic of Genoa. And guess what, everyone hated Genoa.

I love that even the Sopranos mentions that Columbus wasn’t “Italian”, he was Genoese (Italian unification wouldn’t happen for several hundred years) and would have hated them because the Genoese and Napolitani, Pisans, Venetians, etc. all hated eachother and were in constant conflict.

Flying the Genoese flag upside down and nobody notices
October 15, 2026 at 8:36 PM
@davidjroth.bsky.social I'm placing bets on which Genoese flag is going up at the Alito household this weekend. Do they go with the traditional flag (which is easily confused with the English flag) or the more distinctive modern one?

Thank you Mayor Mamdani, Sir. Please allow me to add a few lines to your speech:

"In Italy, Columbus never became a figure through whom the nation could achieve a sense of collective redemption. Genoese, yes, but in the service of Spain, he would never become a Garibaldi or a Mazzini.
Happy Italian Heritage Month, New York.

Here’s continuing to fight for Vito Marcantonio’s vision of a government that works for all working people.

i will be dead and buried before i acknowledge the Genoese as ""Italian""

In Columbus's time, Italy was not unified and did not exist as a country. If anything, one could say Columbus was Genoese, but not Italian.

The combo of “strunz” and “supposedly Genoese, who didn’t speak any italic language” is so so so Italian 🤣

100% approved 👍🏻

No I don't think this admin would of liked the immigrants who came here spoke Genoese/Ligurian dialect from the Republic of Genoa, and used Castilian Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin to communicate among themselves while committing "Bigly"crimes in the Americas. "Bad guys."

I just don't see it.

He was Genoese - from Genoa, in Italy.
October 13, 2026 at 3:12 AM
In what year did the Genoese start identifying as being in the same group as Sicilians and Napolese (where most Italian Americans trace their ancestry)?
October 13, 2026 at 3:04 AM
He was of Genoese descent and the "discoverer" of America. So of course they were also American.

The Catholic community also stood in solidarity with the Italian community. After intense lobbying, the President relented to appease them.

Here's your annual reminder that Leif Erikson beat that Genoese war criminal to the Americas by about 500 years.

Columbus wasn’t even Italian. The Genoese don’t count. Happy Giancarlo Esposito day to a real Italian American.

Good Morning Gonz! Yez I heartily second that greeting and those sentiments which are very much worth celebrating! As opposed to the ravagement caused by the drunken, hopelessly lost Genoese reprobate who shall not be named.😡

Yeah. Genoese and devoutly Catholic as far as anyone can tell, though some people haved tried to claim his signature references the kaddish or that him speaking some degree of Catalan is proof he actually spoke Ladino.

Christopher Columbus wasn't Italian. Italy didn't exist. He was born in the Genoese Republic and served the crown of Spain. Thanks for coming to my yearly TEDtalk.

🗃️ Happy Indigenous People's Day, and not "Evil Genocidal 15th-century Genoese Maniac Day."

Just a reminder that no one needs to claim that guy!
🗃️ In Genoa a couple years ago I saw this sculpture by Bruno Catalano, which says much more about what it means to be Genoese, or "Italian" than the fake outrage of Chris Rufo and the never-ending saga of Christopher Columbus apologism.

no shoehorning of histories of other parts of the Americas into shoehorning of 'Italians' (ed. Genoese C*lombo, among other faults, would have disdained southerners migrating to North/South America at turn of last century) into 'Murican history, please 😁
October 12, 2026 at 7:47 PM
And Amerigo Vespucci worked for Portugal. He was still Italian. You don't stop being Italian if you work for another country. He wasn't sailing from Genoa because the Genoese weren't funding voyages of exploration and colonization.

Or the Genoese merchants in Seville.
October 12, 2026 at 7:27 PM
Ooh the Genoese folks are gonna be ruffled about this one lol
October 12, 2026 at 7:25 PM
Exactly, the Spanish or Jewish or Genoese are easy targets that maga hate too. It is never about rolling back injustice against Greenland or Venezuela or Ukrainian resources looted by trump or protecting Canada from annexation, or returning stolen land and loot, it is about targeted othering.
