the big thing about over-genrefication is that it eliminates any possibility of surprise. if you can fit an art form into 15-20 pre-existing labels or tags, that work of art will contain almost no experimentation. it will have nothing new in it. you can't fit something new into a tag.
this is wildly true. I have always hated the hairsplitting taxonomy process for my own stuff. “there’s not enough drama in this queer romance!! why is there so much murder mystery in this fantasy?” it’s an endless process of unhappy qualification that achieves nothing
The subcategorization/tropefication of popular fiction has been very bad in general, both for authors and readers.

(doom wad) videos years ago, but a dream i have for games is that after 1993, Doom & MYST's influence could have merged and create some kind of newer and stranger whole. genrefication took away from seeing both games have more in common with each other than people realize

It's hard to shake the sensation that this game is some sort of punishment for the direction that action gaming has gone in the last ten years. This started out because of Versus XIII hype and is now something trying to compete with Post-Souls Genrefication. There isn't a single bone in this body.

I liked this thought about the genrefication of translated literature. It reminded me of our conversation about the success of German novels in English-speaking countries, and I feel like the essay touches on that but doesn’t develop it.
I hate myself for this but I'm sitting here reading the above and have a dad enough sense of humor that I realized I'm describing a process of genrefication if you will. And also if you won't. I'm so sorry it's a really good book I swear... Cryptonomicon. Sorry.

het meest irritante aan genrefication is als men het heeft over alternative rock bij underground bands uit de jaren '80. De term kwam pas op bij de commodificatie van undergroundmuziek in de 90s, grunge etc. Het is een term door de industrie uitgevonden voor commercieel aantrekkelijke underground

I’ve lined up a few Mahavishnu Orchestra albums to play. It’s been a while since I did: Inner Mounting Flame is first up - 🤩 - urgent, sparkling, cerebral, groovy, otherworldly, masterful, utterly unique ‘jazz rock fusion’ (which is a genrefication that falls woefully short of what’s going on here).
Cleaning up after a sweaty day at work, found one of my genrefication colored dots in the shower with me.
It's not a color I was using today.
