GeoIP from my PC places me in Brisbane, which is technically accurate, but it places me in postcode 4000, which isn't, and even if it were more general, Brisbane is a pretty large area. GeoIP from my phone just straight up places me in Sydney, 1,500 km to the south
the other wrinkle in all these "we're banning porn for UK users!" and "bluesky isn't available in mississippi" stories that no one seems to be talking about:
geo-ip is inaccurate as shit, even before VPNs get involved. you can't just detect where people are with any kind of consistency

geoip is funny: at home when I google "weer" it shows me the weather. here in Scotland it shows me the definition of that word ("more wee", smaller)

A few possibilities:
- Using a VPN, Proxy, etc at signup
- IP address used at signup has been reallocated or suchlike, thus geolocates differently now (using today geoip data to lookup IP locations from years ago)
- Twitter simply using bad data somewhere
- Using a VPN, Proxy, etc at signup

We've improved how we direct connections to GrapheneOS servers by using anycast to fill in missing GeoIP data. This should reduce service latency and improve download bandwidth for many users in the western US and especially with certain VPN providers.

Seeing a lot of this going around about "Russians" attempting to access NLRB after DOGE came and Jenna is absolutely correct here. GeoIP data alone is not grounds to make an attribution. Highly recommend reading her work on this. It's exhaustive.
Also it wasn’t definitively Russians attempting to log in: it was Russian IPs. It’s different. Okay, getting off my soapbox- but let’s support journalism and read before we post!

We use European servers for serving updates and network services to European IPs based on GeoIP with fallback to anycast via nameserver location. GeoIP is almost always correct for continent and even country, especially for residential connections. Our EU website/network servers were France+Germany.
