A GeoPackage, of course.

Did you know that you can package a complete #qgis :qgis: project (incl. all your layers and data) in a single #geopackage file, e.g. to move it to another system?

Practical examples, on the new hub:

I am trying to remove myself from using this format. That may be a 2025 goal: only use geopackage.
happy international shapefiIe day to all who celebrate

My Overture/Source Coop/Cloud downloader QGIS plug-in is live! It lets you download a GeoParquet or GeoPackage for just your view port from hosted GeoParquet files.

Check it out at plugins.qgis.org/plugins/qgis... and install it by searching for 'GeoParquet Downloader' in the QGIS plugin manager.

Writing a GeoPackage(GPKG) library from scratch taught me a lot about some friction between the spec and the modern geospatial ecosystem🦀🌍

GPKG is SQLite. We take that for granted, but have you ever stopped to think about the advantages and disadvantages? Here’s my take.

How it feels to write a GPKG library in 2026 (in Rust!)
There are a lot of existing libraries to deal with GeoPackage (GPKG). GDAL is the undisputed champion...

This week #TidyTuesday is about bringing our own data. Using the 2021 Census geopackage data from Portugal’s national statistics agency, I created a bivariate map of Lisbon’s residences categorized by low and high numbers of divisions.

Geopackage is king!

Copernicus is making Rapid Mapping data easier to use during emergencies.

Crisis layers and their associated metadata are now available in a single Geopackage, making it quick to integrate crisis information into your geoinformation system.

@mackaszechno.bsky.social Think it was a geopackage but will check when I’m back at work! Official services in the UK seem to vary pretty wildly what they name that column, baffles me!

Holding out for National Geopackage Day.

Does anyone have good experience using the US National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) dataset? I'm contemplating translating it into GeoParquet to make it easier to download portions of it. But it's got a ton of tables in the GeoPackage - do people use all of those? Or is there a key subset?

I shipped browser-based geospatial file conversion in MapGO.io

You can now convert files like Shapefile (.zip), GeoJSON, KML, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage, SQLite, and more without leaving the web app.

Trying to make GIS workflows a little less painful, one feature at a time.

Last step in getting shinyApp to autogenerate layers (find layers in geopackage |> create reactive data |> create observations |> display layer) is now working for the test layer. Soon, both known and unknown layers will be picked up via st_layers() and displayed automatically in the map 😁

...and for vector data you have SOZip, Search Optimized Zip, that works with GeoPackage and FlatGeoBuf. You can use the indexes in your spatial data even though the data is compressed!

You get the similar shocking results.

We've listened to your feedback.

Starting with #QField 4.2, we are dropping support for GeoPackage, GeoJSON, PostGIS, WFS, and all other formats to fully focus on delivering the best possible #Shapefile experience.

We know change is hard. We believe in you.

One format. One future.

@obrien.page

You see this? Updateable geopackage records! What a time to be alive ... 🙂

Geopackages are just fancy SQLite dbs. You could write the simplified geometry to a separate layer (i.e. table) in the geopackage and query it by index

Here is a nice blog post from Lindie, one of our #kartoza interns, on her efforts to shrink down her geopackage so she can publish it on the #QGIS hub.

I mean, shapefiles suck almost as much as kmls. And yet, somehow, they are quasi-standards in the agtech industry.

Long live the geopackage! (and flatgeobuf)
