A glowworm pokemon
Returning to Renown, Glowworm spotted two destroyers. When hailed, they insisted they were Swedish.
Glowworm pointed out that Swedish ships tended to fly Swedish pennants. 🤔🧐
The 'Swedish' destroyers responded to this excellent point by lobbing shells at Glowworm then frantically running away. /3

HMS Glowworm slammed into Hipper's side with so much force it snapped the destroyer's bow off. She scraped down Hipper's side, tearing off armour panels.
On Hipper, Heye watched in awe as what was left of HMS Glowworm drifted away, burning and opened fire with her last gun on his ship YET AGAIN /13

Roope knew if the Germans were at sea, they were likely inbound for Norway. Glowworm might be the only ship who knew they were coming.
He HAD to find whatever the destroyers were running for and alert Renown and the British fleet.
So Glowworm raced after them, refusing to let them escape. /4

Glowworms at Melba Gully and at the Glowworm Cave, Australia. These are fly larvae from a fungus gnat, super tiny and hard to photograph up close and in the dark (getting the focus right and no shake was very tricky).

Unfortunately for Roope, Heye himself was a very good captain. He realised what Glowworm was trying to do. He swung Hipper round and managed to avoid Glowworm's torpedoes and keep her from getting close enough to hurt his ship.

I’m so happy that I’ve finally done a firefly&glowworm themed piece!
When we talk about bioluminescent insects, we usually first think of those flying & twinkling little fairies. However, many of them are in the form of wingless “worms”, and I found them equally fascinating 💙
