Commonly known as rattails, grenadiers have large blue eyes that can spot flickers of bioluminescence. They can also smell decaying organic matter and use their whisker-like chin barbels to detect tiny crustaceans and worms wriggling along the seafloor. #SamplingGap, 1,580 & 3,326 m

"The common piddock glows in the dark! Through bioluminescence, it glows blue-green around the edges. Amazingly, the protein that creates this glow has been extracted from common piddocks and used to help identify when people are getting ill "

Those electric-blue waves aren't magic — they're dinoflagellates, tiny plankton that flash blue when disturbed. Scientists think the burst of light is a burglar alarm: it attracts bigger predators that scare off the plankton's attackers. #Ocean #Bioluminescence #Science

That is such a beautiful glow effect. And I love how the dick glow is subtle enough that it could be overlooked but still noticeable enough to be clear.

Also bioluminescence in the eyes. interesting. I wonder if that has any effect on their vision?
