Nothing like being half asleep and prepping for back-to-back presentations on a Monday morning only to open up my email and find out that I got awarded my travel grant.

Maybe today won't be all bad after all. :)

Thinking about doing a PhD abroad? Before you say yes to a PI, ask: “How many international students have you worked with?” In this clip, Dr. Fareha Razvi and I cover what to ask next if the answer is none.

Also, if you’re someone who got an autoreply to your email asking about gradschool, know that I give each app equal attention/care & don’t privilege those who reach out in advance. I probably lose some great applicants by not playing favorites in advance, but it’s worth it for fairness reasons
One reason I do not publicly complain about AI generated application emails, nor reply curtly to the applicants, is that the equilibrium we're in affects them much more than any annoyance I might have in receiving the emails.

AI usage by both sides is bleak

Thought a 5‑column matrix was overkill until my advisor called my draft “scattershot.” I stripped it to source, purpose, method, finding, gap—one row per article—and the review snapped into a coherent argument. #literature #gradschool

Midterm week hit and my regression table collapsed because my literature‑review matrix was just a list of authors. I stopped the dump, added columns for theory, methods, key findings, and a “gap” tag; the matrix instantly guided citation placement and saved two weeks. #literature #gradschool

Midterm panic and a blank Methodology Chapter? Paste the three‑paragraph scaffold I stole from a senior’s appendix: 1) brief design overview, 2) data‑collection checklist, 3) analysis flowchart. Fill each bullet, you’re done. #GradSchool

12‑point rubric for Chapter 2? The “depth” criterion isn’t about citing every article you skimmed—just three core studies, each linked to your research question, with a sentence explaining the gap you’ll fill. Write that gap line first, then flesh out the citations.

Literature review hack: the synthesis matrix.
Rows = your sources. Columns = themes. Fill the cells, then read down each column. Every column becomes a section of your review.
