The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship closes Tuesday, October 27. Fellows get $37,000 a year plus $16,000 a year for tuition, for three years. It's for STEM college seniors and students less than a year into grad school.

Cowen asks about spending; Kratsios claims that the 2027 R&D budget was the largest proposed. This is certainly not true of non-defense funding.

Kratsios highlights the record number of GRFP fellows NSF awarded earlier this year, but dodges the question of the ~55% requested cut to NSF.
Cowen: But Congress — but what the president wants, and you’re representing the executive branch here — the president seems to want less money in a whole number of areas. Kratsios: Well, if you want to play the numbers game, the president in the fiscal year 2027 budget proposed the largest R&D budget in the history of the country. So I think that’s one way to look at it. Our commitment to spending on R&D has never been greater, and no president in history has ever committed more. I think the other thing that I’m very proud of is that this president has essentially funded the largest class of Graduate Research Fellowship Programs in history — the premier fellowship that the N.S.F. gives to the brightest American students that are going to be pursuing graduate degrees. So we have funded the largest number in the history of the United States. And I think the other thing we talked about —— Cowen: But N.S.F. funding itself is still going down under the president’s plan, right? Kratsios: So right now Congress has appropriated the same amount, and we’re spending that money. And I think back to your point, and I get your point ——

Funding comes from EDU, so the issue is more a question of who reviews/recommends the GRFP apps with few to no SBE staff, and whether they'll be allowed to be selected.

There was a shooting at Colorado State Fort Collins between the chemistry and microbiology building. My son was in the micr bldg in his GRFP writing class at the time.

He is OK but really fucking scary texts to get.
