Concerns about grade inflation in Canadian schools have increased, partly due to changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as cancelling major exams, freezing grades, and adopting compassionate grading practices. These measures led to a temporary rise in student grades, but the trend of increasing grades predates the pandemic and has been ongoing for decades in both Canada and the United States. Grade inflation refers to the gradual increase in grades over time without corresponding improvements in student performance, which can undermine the reliability of grades as indicators of achievement. Data show that average grades for Grade 12 students in Toronto rose by six per cent between 2019 and 2021, and similar trends are observed in university admissions, where median entry grades across Ontario universities increased from 81.4% in 2006 to 88.2% in 2021. However, rising admission averages are also influenced by supply and demand: more students are applying to universities than there are available spots, increasing competition for high grades. Other contributing factors include better teaching methods, evidence-based assessment practices, and policies that separate learning skills from curriculum knowledge. While grades have risen, they continue to provide a reliable measure of student achievement, and higher grades are not inherently problematic if they reflect genuine learning. Further research is needed to understand post-pandemic grading trends across diverse student groups.
