Urge News Blackout EUGENE (To the Editor) It's hard to undersțand why the press and radio play up all these left-wing radicals and others that want us to get out of Viet Nam. They are only a very small percentage of our population anyway, and for us to back out of there now would be a disaster of the first magnitude. You simply do not go into a war to back out or quit, you go in to win. President Johnson, on the advice of all of his top men, made this move, and whether we voted for him or not is another question. This war, or any war, is not necessarily a matter of politics, and I am quite sure a Republican president would have done the same thing President Johnson is doing. Nobody wants war, we all want peace, but you don't acquire peace in this situation by “turnıng tail” and running. The only thing a lot of us say is, "Hit 'em harder." and get this over as quickly as possible like we did in our war with Japan.. I am quite sure that when this is all over and our boys come home I would not want to be one of those who now advocate getting out of Viet Nam, our boys that come home are apt to pull the whiskers off these slackers. I would say to the press and radio, let's give this bunch of whatever-you-might-call-them a blackout as far as news about them is concerned. Mr. Editor the only way a lot of fellows can get recognition is through some stupid move like this, and the quicker we black them out the quicker they will lose interest. Eugene, Oregon Jan. 18, 1973 Gov. Tom McCall Dear Governor ; The subject is mandatory seat belts for the State of Oregon. It is difficult for me to believe our Governor would propose to take away one more of our constitutional rights. The intent of this letter is not to discuss the pro and con use of seat belts, but it certainly should be everyones prerogative to use them or not. If you feel the need to try and save peoples lives, why do you not face the real issue? Such as safe driving. Who is allowed to start driving and a close scrutiny of driving records. It would make more sense if you proposed to the legislature to prohibit smokeing and driving. In my 56 years of driving I have been forced in the ditch several times by some one trying to light a cigarette or trying to light one myself, but no one ever put me in the ditch because they were not wearing a seat belt. Of the two I would mueh rather meet a drunk driver than someone te trying to light a cigarette. At least the drunk can see where he is going. At the time seat belts were introduced I noticed immediately they had a bad effect on younger drivers. It gave them a false sense of security. They would snap their belt and think they were in Gods pocket. Any apprehension that did exist was gone. In Oregon where there is so much water, rivers, lakes and dams we are vulnerable to them. Many people drown because they are held in by a seat belt. Others burn up, by the same reason The statistics on the use of seal belts is false. Never in the thousands of accidents have I ever read a life was lost because they were strapped in a car. We know that is erroneous. In no way does a seat belt make anyone better driver and that is what Oregon wants and needs. Aside from the seat belt issue the State of Oregon is asking and encouraging lane switching on freeways, Iane switching is the most dangerious and causes more accidents than any single act on the freeway, yet the State of Oregon is asking us to do that very thing.
