'NOTHER TEDDY CALLED Eugene (To the Editor):-I have read with great interest the letter in vour paper of May 21st, under the Editors Mail Bag,' and which you have headed, "A QUEST FOR LOGIC." I am sure the writer has hit the nail on the head and expressed what is in the minds of a large majority of our citizens. In a small way I happen to know something of this Communist set-up for at one time I had charge of what was "called' the Self Help Program, in the County of Clark, Washington State. This was at that time when the Dies Committee was active and before the Communists, pinks, and hanger-ons had smeared Dies and run him out and off the committee. (Of course anvone with a grain of sense knows now that Dies was right) My job was supposed to be that of organizing work groups for the unemployed in Clark County but I was soon told by a big party man for that County, "Grover, you are too busy, set down on a log and whittle awhile." After about so much trouble with what I thought was just agitators I got a tip to see Captain O'Dale, head of the Red Squad for the northwest and he soon told me where the trouble was. He said we have now recognized godless Russia and the Communists are flocking here as fast as they can and THATS YOUR TROUBLE. What did I do about my part in this? I notified my Congressman and Harry Hopkins, and then the next thing I knew I HAD NO JOB. I found out two weeks after they had stopped my pay that I had been fired by orders from Washington.

A rare joint letter from Mr. (Grover) and Mrs. (Effie) Slayter dated November 10 1965, suggesting opposition to the Vietnam war could be alleviated if the Eugene Register-Guard simply stopped reporting on the subject.

Urge News Blackout EUGENE (To the Editor) It's hard to undersțand why the press and radio play up all these left-wing radicals and others that want us to get out of Viet Nam. They are only a very small percentage of our population anyway, and for us to back out of there now would be a disaster of the first magnitude. You simply do not go into a war to back out or quit, you go in to win. President Johnson, on the advice of all of his top men, made this move, and whether we voted for him or not is another question. This war, or any war, is not necessarily a matter of politics, and I am quite sure a Republican president would have done the same thing President Johnson is doing. Nobody wants war, we all want peace, but you don't acquire peace in this situation by “turnıng tail” and running. The only thing a lot of us say is, "Hit 'em harder." and get this over as quickly as possible like we did in our war with Japan.. I am quite sure that when this is all over and our boys come home I would not want to be one of those who now advocate getting out of Viet Nam, our boys that come home are apt to pull the whiskers off these slackers. I would say to the press and radio, let's give this bunch of whatever-you-might-call-them a blackout as far as news about them is concerned. Mr. Editor the only way a lot of fellows can get recognition is through some stupid move like this, and the quicker we black them out the quicker they will lose interest. Dogs a menace Dogs, dogs and more dogs. This city of Eugene is certainly being infested with dogs. Not in just one sector, as some might surmise because of this letter, but we hear this complaint from all over town. What's being done about it? Well, apparently at present very little, for day after day and week after week we see more and more dogs. Very few dogs are on a leash, as the city law prescribes,and mostly they have the run of the town. You might say, "Call the dog control." Many, many people have and do call the dog control, but with very little effect. It's quite apparent that there are more dogs on welfare than there are people, for most folks that have dogs have from one to two or three. As far as "dog control" is concerned there is no such thing; there may be some sort of an effort - but control? Absolutely none. There is an answer, if the sheriff would care to follow through on it: Simply notify by radio and newspapers that after a certain date any and all dogs caught loose would be shot on sight with no questions asked. Believe you me, dog owners that thought anything of their dogs would see to it that they were on leash, and I believe I am safe in saying that after a few dogs were shot things would take a turn for the better. You talk, or try to talk, to these fellows with loose dogs and they just laugh at you for they know the city won't do anything about it even if they are reported. While I write this I can hear dogs barking…. Being an elderly man, I hesitate to try and walk out on the streets, as these seemingly harmless dogs do attack sometimes. They attacked our mail man a short time back . . . Mr. Editor, it is a menace, make no mistake about that and I presume you have your own dog troubles in your neighborhood, I positively would not go out on the street alone without carrying some kind of a weapon for protection… GROVER S. Eugene, Oregon Jan. 18, 1973 Gov. Tom McCall Dear Governor ; The subject is mandatory seat belts for the State of Oregon. It is difficult for me to believe our Governor would propose to take away one more of our constitutional rights. The intent of this letter is not to discuss the pro and con use of seat belts, but it certainly should be everyones prerogative to use them or not. If you feel the need to try and save peoples lives, why do you not face the real issue? Such as safe driving. Who is allowed to start driving and a close scrutiny of driving records. It would make more sense if you proposed to the legislature to prohibit smokeing and driving. In my 56 years of driving I have been forced in the ditch several times by some one trying to light a cigarette or trying to light one myself, but no one ever put me in the ditch because they were not wearing a seat belt. Of the two I would mueh rather meet a drunk driver than someone te trying to light a cigarette. At least the drunk can see where he is going. At the time seat belts were introduced I noticed immediately they had a bad effect on younger drivers. It gave them a false sense of security. They would snap their belt and think they were in Gods pocket. Any apprehension that did exist was gone. In Oregon where there is so much water, rivers, lakes and dams we are vulnerable to them. Many people drown because they are held in by a seat belt. Others burn up, by the same reason The statistics on the use of seal belts is false. Never in the thousands of accidents have I ever read a life was lost because they were strapped in a car. We know that is erroneous. In no way does a seat belt make anyone better driver and that is what Oregon wants and needs. Aside from the seat belt issue the State of Oregon is asking and encouraging lane switching on freeways, Iane switching is the most dangerious and causes more accidents than any single act on the freeway, yet the State of Oregon is asking us to do that very thing.
