#Grantmaking
The Spencer Foundation is pausing most of its grantmaking for the first half of 2027. As one of the few broad funders of education research, they're simply overwhelmed.

Another example! NSF backs away from proposed grant-policy changes! An updated NSF proposal removes language based on the controversial OMB grantmaking proposal, following more than 3,000 public comments back in August. NSF reiterates its commitment to merit review. The proposal is undergoing review
And yes, these comments matter! This past September, a judge blocked DHS's rule shortening student visas. This block was partly because the DHS failed to respond to public comments on that proposal. The DHS needs to listen to the public, especially those impacted by their proposals.

… who think about the governance and design of the science grantmaking agency processes, more specifically

"In my opinion, this Article is a deathblow to the unitary executive theory..."

And, relevant to science: "Lawmakers throughout US history have [shielded from political control] modes of administration that ... handled sensitive money-related tasks."

I'd say science grantmaking is exactly that.

American federal science grantmaking should be protected in law from presidential political interference

I wrote this week about how quasijudicial functions exist at NIH, and should be protected from presidential control.

The FLRA example is very on point for the same - and both show why scientists should (sigh!!!) care about admin law details like this.

Vought has led a fierce campaign to insert political oversight into all grantmaking.

The administrative apparatus has also been hollowed out: no director, no deputy director, acting director Stone is reportedly leaving.

All 22 of the NSF scientific advisory board were fired and never replaced.

Philanthropy wants long-term change but funds short-term work.

A benchmark from the Schott Foundation and PTKO rates funders on multiyear and unrestricted giving. Of seven foundations picked as leaders, none hit the top tier.

Participatory grantmaking varies by how much decision-making power funders cede to communities, determining whether participation is consultation or control.

The Antifa line is satire, while the OSF description concerns a real grantmaking network whose stated mission is not proof of how every grant operates. Keeping those distinct allows scrutiny of Soros-funded projects without turning a Jeopardy joke into conspiracy evidence.
