Banner for M. Walsh's fantasy novel "The Gray Kings" with the tagline, "Great things demand the worst horrors..." Also shows cover blurb: "Graylands is where people go when they don’t want to be found. "Since its discovery, the country has settled into a loose collection of territories for the unwanted and unmoored to disappear or begin anew. A frontier with neither king, nor ruler. But there are some who seek to dominate and turn the land into a new, whole kingdom. "When that happens, war inevitably follows. "After his ordeal with Bane’s Gauntlet, Lock Synclaire searches for his missing sister Cassie. His journey will take him from the ruined city of Seba to the very center of Graylands where he’ll become embroiled in the war for control of the country. And, perhaps, a greater destiny as well. "Meanwhile, former Chosen One and fallen princess Katrina Lamont is on her own quest for revenge. To find the closure she seeks, she will have to traverse a ravaged land and survive threats both mortal and immortal. But first, she’ll need the help of the outlaw Krutch Leeroy. "As the chaos spreads, all hope rests in the hands of a demon. "By chance—or plain bad luck—Lily Blackthorn finds herself in possession of a mysterious relic that may decide the country’s fate. Hunted by assassins and enemies, she must risk her life and more to deliver the sacred weapon…even as it slowly kills her. "With war brewing, and ancient foes rising to destroy everything, the rogues of Graylands just might have to act to preserve their home." The book cover depicts a severe snow-storm with mountains in the hazy distance. There is a lone, shadowy figure/entity with glowing yellow eyes in the blizzard. Art by M. “I’m sorry,” he said. “What exactly is it you’re suggesting I should do? Vigor’s gone. There’s no throne to claim.” “Not yet there isn’t. What I’m suggesting, Lord Synclaire, is you declare yourself King of Graylands.” Lock stopped short and stared at the old woman. Her words repeated in his mind as if Ruth smashed them into his brain with a hammer: King of Graylands. He managed to choke out, “Come again?”

“No argument there. Between you and me, the Sentry Elite in Graylands aren’t just spread thin, we’re undermanned. It’s a sad irony. This country probably needs the Sentry Elite more than any other, but most of the higher-ups think this place is a hole not worth devoting the manpower.” Lock tightened his lips. He couldn’t say Drake’s words surprised him. Back home—his real home in Kingsmoor of the Western Empire—Graylands had the reputation of being a land for vagabonds and thieves. Most nobles, and probably the Eastern Empire as well, thought it better to let the savages eat themselves. Why waste the resources of the Sentry Elite on trash? “It’s a mistake,” Drake continued. “The Two Empires are too occupied with themselves to see what really happens here. The world’s changing, Mr. Synclaire, and there are darker forces out there than Vincent Dune. I guarantee, when the sword drops, it’ll start in Graylands.”

Lock shook his head at the irony of Graylands being a place where people could escape the old world and old ways just to embrace the same principles. “Why not call themselves King and be done with it? If they’re running their cities like private kingdoms, why bother with the lesser titles?” “Kings ask for trouble. People will put up with a Baron and a Duke and Lord, but the only people who dare call themselves King are the guys who try to unite Graylands. And kings don’t last long in this country.” He nodded and gazed at the woods surrounding them. Evening drained the land of color, turning the trees and road into darkened shades of gray. Even the snow seemed dimmer as rain slowly turned it to wet ice. As strange as it sounded, he understood the logic. A baron or duke, while still denoting authority and status, seemed minor and temporary where a king or queen had a sense of finality. A lesser lord would eventually pass. A man calling himself King meant to stay that way.
