John Lavery's picture of a figure walking through a woodland glade was painted in 1884 at Grez-sur-Loing, a quiet village, five miles south of Fontainbleau; it is a naturalistic scene influenced by the broad brushwork of the French pastoralist Jules Bastien-Lepage.

Listening to the Double Concerto for Violin & Cello by Frederick Delius. It was written after Delius heard Brahms’s Double Concerto, but this is 100% Delius, 0% Brahms. Lovely, but not especially dynamic.

'The Haunted Chateau Of Grez-sur-Loing' by #Scottish artist David Gauld. Over the years this picturesque village in northern #France attracted a bewildering number of artists. There seems no certain ghost story about the chateau - I think it just looked haunted!

Painted during Larsson’s stay in the artists’ colony at Grez-sur-Loing, October (The Pumpkins) exemplifies his shift toward the intimate, naturalistic watercolours that would define much of his mature style. The composition presents Mère Morot, a local resident, in a modest garden at the height of the autumn harvest. Clad in a simple work dress and headscarf, she carries a wicker basket past ripening pumpkins and other seasonal produce. The subdued palette, careful modulation of light, and quiet dignity of the figure convey an unembellished authenticity, elevating the ordinariness of rural labour into a scene of poetic stillness. The painting is rooted in Larsson’s broader interest in genre subjects that honour the rhythms of domestic and agricultural life, and its naturalistic rendering aligns with late-19th-century Scandinavian realism while also resonating with the ideals of the emerging Art Nouveau movement. Of particular note, Larsson’s fiancée at the time, Karin Bergöö—later Karin Larsson—also painted a version of the same motif in 1882. This pairing of works marks one of the couple’s earliest artistic collaborations, underscoring their shared vision and mutual influence during the formative Grez-sur-Loing years.

55-210mm sounds like fun.

Today, we went to Grez-sur-Loing where there was an artists' open day. It has attracted artists since the 19th century. It has a 12 c. church, a famous bridge, and 12th c. castle. (will post pics!)

Tomorrow, we're going to Paris for the "Cezanne et nous" exhibition.

Grez-sur-Loing is a village not far from Paris. It was colonised by artists, like Corot, and writers in the 19th century. August Strindberg stayed here around 1882.

No wide shots just details. The first shows the Ganne Tower which was built in 1127. Others show roofs, the church and the bridge.
