How does the 🧠-map choose what to sample?
Preprint: #Sweeps in #gridcells act as attention-like signal, dynamically biasing the map towards behaviourally relevant locations.

The hippocampal map has its own attentional control signal!
Our new study reveals that theta #sweeps can be instantly biased towards behaviourally relevant locations. See 📹 in post 4/6 and preprint here 👉

Attention-like regulation of theta sweeps in the brain's spatial navigation circuit
Spatial attention supports navigation by prioritizing information from selected locations. A candidate neural mechanism is provided by theta-paced sweeps in grid- and place-cell population activity, which sample nearby space in a left-right-alternating pattern coordinated by parasubicular direction signals. During exploration, this alternation promotes uniform spatial coverage, but whether sweeps can be flexibly tuned to locations of particular interest remains unclear. Using large-scale Neuropixels recordings in freely-behaving rats, we show that sweeps and direction signals are rapidly and dynamically modulated: they track moving targets during pursuit, precede orienting responses during immobility, and reverse during backward locomotion — without prior spatial learning. Similar modulation occurs during REM sleep. Canonical head-direction signals remain head-aligned. These findings identify sweeps as a flexible, attention-like mechanism for selectively sampling allocentric cognitive maps. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. Theta sweeps are population sequences in #gridcells and #placecells that, once per theta cycle, radiate outward from the animal’s location. In baseline conditions, they alternate rigidly left-right around the head axis, generating broad, forward-oriented sampling of nearby #space. (2/6) 🧠🧹

Its further based only on gridcells that have relatively complete data, though it is true that I probably should have started it around ~1900 given larger spatial gaps before then. But even in the 1870s we had pretty good coverage in Berkeley Earth:

This is using a 3-level grid approach: Bricks of 8x8x8 voxels are indexed by cells of a grid; 4x4x4 gridcells are represented by a single bit in the 'topLevelGrid' for fast empty space skipping.

#Gridcells generate rhythmic theta sweeps 🧹 across the brain’s internal map. We show these #sweeps are not rigid - they retune from moment to moment according to behavioral demands. They can narrow and lock onto prey, reverse during backward movement, and persist even during REM sleep. 🧵2/8

seems like the availability of compute steers research methods. brute force parameter explosion on tiny gridcells in tiny timesteps isn't the only way to understand things. It looks like it optimizes for better prediction at the expense of understanding, theory, reproducibility, and scrutiny.

Yeah. It's a concern, but I wouldn't rate it as a big one when calculating the global mean. HadCRUT handles that kind of situation nicely by assigning appropriate uncertainties to all gridcells. Correlated errors from the individual ships are also accounted for.
