#PlaceCells
New research in eLife challenges some long-held ideas about place cells and grid cells and suggests a powerful border-to-place cell pathway for navigation.

Learning place cells and remapping by decoding the cognitive map
Border cells are sufficient to generate place cells and remapping during path integration in artificial neural networks, challenging the role of grid cells for spatial navigation.

A half-century old question may have its final answer. Using high-resolution #Mini2P microscopes, we find no evidence of local topography in #PlaceCells. Place fields of neighbouring cells are no more similar than those of randomly selected cells. 🧠🗺️ Out now in @pnas.org www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Theta sweeps are population sequences in #gridcells and #placecells that, once per theta cycle, radiate outward from the animal’s location. In baseline conditions, they alternate rigidly left-right around the head axis, generating broad, forward-oriented sampling of nearby #space. (2/6) 🧠🧹

More strangeness: about a third of place cells exhibited repeating firing fields on each ridge.

Even though the ridges were in completely different parts of the room, the brain seemed to map them similarly based on their shape.

These "place cells" underlie an internal map of the world around you.

They are mostly found in a really cool brain region called the hippocampus 🧠

What exactly are "place cells"? ⁉️

When you walk around your kitchen, a specific neuron activates (fires action potentials) only when you stand next to the fridge.

Move over to the sink, and a completely different neuron activates.

To find out, we recorded from hippocampal place cells, which are thought to underlie the brain's internal map, while rats foraged in a large (3x1.5 meters!) custom-built 3D "Hillscape" featuring three sinusoidal ridges.

We explored how behavior, senses, and neurons influence how much information in the brain changes over time.

Hippocampal representations drift in stable multisensory environments - Nature
Tracking of individual place cells in mouse CA1 shows that representational drift is not influenced by changes in environment or behaviour, and is lower for more excitable place cells.
