Cool preprint from the Meister lab. Mice learn a complex 3D maze in a few rewards. So do mutants lacking hippocampus and dorsal cortex (30% of cortical volume left).

Structure sets which dynamics are possible but the operating regime selects among them. A modeling preprint from Gaglioti, Massimini et al. makes this concrete with Wilson-Cowan networks rewired from lattice to random to modular. 🧵

Neuro colleagues, especially synaptic ones:

Is this Hebbian language something that should still be used even in a book for the general public?

"a synapse grows stronger when the receiving neuron
fires within some tens of milliseconds after the sending one"

Retinal waves offer a powerful example of a self-organizing system that can build structure without external guidance, writes P. Robin Hiesinger. The field would do well to embrace such phenomena as a type of mechanistic explanation more broadly. #neuroskyence

Are you procrastinating right now?

We found two separable brain axes for staying on task, arousal and dopamine. GLP-1 agonists (semaglutide) and orexin antagonists (for insomnia) each moved engagement along a different one.
