Real democracies elect their leaders by popular vote. We could do it too.
Need 48 more Electoral College votes for the National Vote Interstate Compact to come into effect.

Dems/coalitions on track to win trifectas in seven states that haven't yet passed the NPVIC: AZ AK MI NV PA WI. That's 64 Electoral College votes.
If enough states elect Democratic trifectas tonight, we could use the powers granted by the Constitution to change how US presidents are elected.

Cover US midterm elections the way US media outlets would cover elections in developing, struggling democracies challenge.

Most democracies have a voter ID system because most democracies issue a national ID card as a matter of course. The bigger issue here, however, is that the Republican Party is completely uninterested in governance beyond tax cuts and punishment.
I'm a no on the voter id thing (prop 39 in CA) but it's pretty frustrating how this is an issue where we can't have a common sense sounding thing due to republicans being insanely racist that they then are able to turn around and exploit as a wedge issue.

Two days. Hundreds of voices. One shared goal: stronger democracies.

From youth participation to citizen-led action, one message stood out: stronger democracies need stronger public participation.

Turns out democracies just don’t like fascists.

It's a good day for democracies.

This guy democracies!
If you haven't voted yet (US): Tomorrows the day. Do you have a plan? How are you getting there? Before/after work? Who's watching the kids? What happens if the line is long? Got your ID? Do you still need to look up any down-ballot races?

If you're local to me, do you need a ride?...

This is both good news & again, not something that you need to worry about in actual full democracies.

"Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections"
November 4, 2026 at 2:22 AM
Is there any election result in the history of democracies to which that doesn’t apply?
November 4, 2026 at 7:32 PM
You could be even bolder and embrace multiple parties and proportional representation. Like real democracies.
November 4, 2026 at 9:28 PM
And in North Dakota there is no voter registration. You just need to present acceptable identification

This is how many other democracies run their elections

Voter registration is the biggest vote suppression law, that we just accept as a norm

The tankie argument is:

There's no democracy without economic democracy.
There are no economic democracies.
There are no democracies.
(Leap of logic)
Therefore, democracies and dictatorships are identical.
(Another leap)
Dictatorships that claim/pretend to be economic democracies deserve support.
The saddest thing about tankies is that they see flaws with democracy as a sign that democracy in general just doesn't exist. But they can't say they hate democracy, so they instead twist themselves into a belief that a one-party dictatorship with no accountability is the truest form of democracy

How Democracies Die
November 1, 2026 at 9:35 AM
1. authoritarians being forced to concede elections in illiberal/electoral democracies when results are overwhelmingly clear
2. the inability of authoritarians in these systems to inhibit voting at scale, despite their efforts
3. the strength of sustained bottom-up civil society-based mobilization
November 4, 2026 at 9:03 AM
In capitalist liberal democracies, the degree of freedom is directly proportional to the amount of capital you own.
November 3, 2026 at 6:31 PM
Dems need to crack down on corruption everywhere. Meta tried (and failed) to swing elections in two major democracies in the last 10 days alone. If we let that stand, they're just gonna get more brazen. Musk personally tried to ratfuck Ukraine to help Putin. It's time for consequences
November 4, 2026 at 12:48 PM
one of the things we need to smother is american exceptionalism. let's rejoin the world. let's enable ourselves to be judged by the same standards other democracies embrace. let's be freaking normal.
November 4, 2026 at 3:41 AM
What, just like in other democracies?
October 31, 2026 at 2:20 PM
A common western narrative these days seems to be that countries like China and North Korea are evil in an essential way because they’re not democracies, but the US and Israel are demonstrating that it’s quite possible to be evil AND a democracy

Also, it's not about you, personally at the individual level, but your system is dangerous and incompatible with our way of life and democracies; if your majority can't see that or can't figure it out, it leaves the rest of us without any other option then to defend and protect ourselves.
November 4, 2026 at 10:24 AM
This applies to democracies too

The U.S. needs strict, enforced regulations on tech, user data, and privacy - at least in line with the other wealthy democracies we like to compare ourselves to.

Until then, more and more Americans are going to conclude Silicon Valley tech is just as dangerous to their own interests as China’s is.
November 3, 2026 at 3:53 PM
Start by deciding who your geopolitical allies are (eg, are you with the democracies or Russia?); rein in the tech oligarchs; stop destroying our climate
Great that American voters have seen sense but there’s a long way to go to repair the global damage of the past year+
