#Mini2P
Now MINI2P has become so small and light that mice can easily carry two of them, opening the doors for studies of circuit interactions. Congratulations, Weijian and team!
A new design framework brings two-photon miniscopes to 1g!
Our lab's MINI2P-II (1.1g) overcomes the widely accepted assumption that high optical performance and ultralow weight cannot coexist. A climbing mouse can carry two, a singing songbird one 🧵

Two-photon neurotechnology innovation 📢
@weijianzong.bsky.social and his Neurophotonics lab at Kavli NTNU have built a 1.1 gram brain microscope.

A 14-gram young zebra finch can carry it, and a mouse can carry two, one on each hemisphere. This breakthrough builds on his MINI2P from 2022 👇

The first bihemispheric 2P imaging in freely moving mice!
MINI2P-II records hundreds of connection-specified neurons from both hemispheres of the primary motor cortex (M1) across multiple days, during naturalistic ladder-climbing. A new experimental window into inter-hemispheric coordination!

The first ipsilateral dual-region 2P imaging in freely moving mice!
With a new optical implant, MINI2P-II achieves simultaneous ipsilateral imaging of the retrosplenial cortex and posterior parietal cortex, two adjacent regions previously inaccessible in this manner in freely moving mice!

Congratulations Weijian and the whole team!! So excited to use MINI2P-II and looking forward to exciting discoveries together 🤩🤩

The first large-scale 2P calcium imaging in freely singing songbirds!
At 1.1g, MINI2P-II enables high-quality 2P imaging in freely moving zebra finches, including juveniles as young as 44 days old, in the critical song-learning period when birds are far too small to carry existing 2P miniscopes.

A half-century old question may have its final answer. Using high-resolution #Mini2P microscopes, we find no evidence of local topography in #PlaceCells. hmm. I worry more about that with Caiman and demixing… But we currently do not denoise. We have pretty noisy mini2p data currently that may benefit, though.
