I hate Richard Coles, but the crypto thing is a bit unfair. The entire market saw an unprecedented crash due to Gridcoin manipulation which was nothing to do with the coin they were shilling.

At least on my case, contributing to #GridCoin is mostly for the sake of helping the #BOINC project. "Mining" for 3 months, my earnings have been roughly $0.30 for $60 of electricity. But I've submitted truckloads of genome scans to find cancer markers, can't say that's useless!

#Gridcoin has a mix of #ProofOfStake and indirect #ProofOfWork. In order for my node to qualify for one chance of doing PoS a day, I would need around 200 000 GRC, which amounts to either $830 USD, or 240 years of #BOINC grinding in my current computer. Hmm...

I set up a #gridcoin node so I could theoretically get paid for running BOINC. That officially makes me a crypto-bro! I'm now the holder of over 1.5 GRD (about 1c).

gridcoin.us This is my favorite project in the general category. You get coin based on contributions to distributed computing projects that benefit math/science knowledge. So that takes care of half the major issue. Some networks use /very/ little energy to conduct txns now. Watchseconds amounts.

Indeed. I am biased but Gridcoin and Foldingcoin could've done so much more with the power needed to keep Bitcoin alive.
