Margery Booth, born Margery Myers Booth on January 25, 1906, in Wigan, Lancashire, was a gifted British mezzo-soprano who trained at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In the 1930s she married German physician Egon Strohm and moved to Germany, where she performed under her married name at the Berlin State Opera and the Bayreuth Festival. Her talent attracted the admiration of Adolf Hitler, who once sent her 200 red roses wrapped in a swastika sash after a performance. When World War II began, Booth used her trusted position among Nazi elites to become an undercover agent for British intelligence. She smuggled military information and ciphers out of Berlin, once concealing secret documents in her underwear before singing for Hitler himself. Allowed to perform for British prisoners of war at camps such as Stalag IIID, she collaborated with captured soldier John Brown, who was posing as a Nazi sympathizer, to gather evidence on British traitors recruiting for the British Free Corps. Booth also sheltered a Jewish woman in her Berlin apartment and aided escaped Allied airmen. Near the war’s end she was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo after Brown’s cover was blown, yet she refused to confess and was released for lack of proof. She fled Berlin during an Allied bombing raid and returned to Britain. Intelligence she provided later helped convict and execute traitors William Joyce (“Lord Haw-Haw”) and John Amery at the Old Bailey. Despite her heroism, many in Britain wrongly suspected her of Nazi sympathies because of her pre-war life in Germany. She emigrated to New York and died of illness on April 11, 1952, at age 46. Her story remained largely unknown until photographs from the POW camp surfaced at auction in 2010.
