I won't get into granular detail on the protection features added to every Japanese aircraft at different points. The general trend was the IJA adding features consistently through the war while the IJN lagged. Only the IJN's J1N1-C and H8K were well protected prior to 1944.

As an aside, did have the privilege of seeing both the US-2's predecessor (Shin Meiwa US-1A) and the last of its kind, the mighty Kawanishi H8K 'Emily'. The Kawanishi Aircraft Company rebranded as Shin Meiwa Industries in 1945, then as ShinMaywa in 1992.

I prefer the H6K (one of Miyazaki's favorites too) but the H8K was a beefy plane for transportation. Something big and weird is going to be dropped from this thing.
