#HBLR
In 2004, when Jersey City was ~20% smaller:
- PATH ran the normal weekday service pattern (at 15 min frequencies) on weekends, plus 10 min midday service on all lines.
- HBLR ran 15-minute headways middays & weekends (vs 20 now)

30 min headways on weekends is not a serious transit system. We need frequent 10 min headways. Sign the @hudcostreets.org petition for better light rail service!

My favorite proposed Meadowlands trails access project is the long-standing plans to connect the Tonnelle Ave HBLR station to the Meadowlands Exposition Center and the surrounding commercial district.

Increase HBLR access & ridership and provide a missing link between Secaucus and North Hudson.

Wait, wait, wait, the HBLR might finally make it into Bergen County?

Is that even legal!?

NewBus Hudson should absolutely use frequent light rail as a spine. Have north-south routes focus on JSQ and use east-west routes to feed HBLR for downtown.

Someone on reddit posted what looks like a faregate installation at the Hoboken HBLR station?

HBLR use proof-of-payment but it’s infamously easy to fare dodge due to minimal fare enforcement staffing. It seems we might be moving towards a hybrid system where the busiest systems get faregates.

The HBLR was built for about $100 million per mile.

HBLR and NLR’s combined 22 miles of light rail transit in North Jersey carrying more people than Dallas’ 119 miles is a double truth nuke:

1. New Jersey needs to invest in more new transit miles

2. Urban planning in DFW is a disaster
In terms of light rail ridership in May 2026 by urban area, the top performers were:
1—Seattle: 4.9 m
2—LA: 4.5 m
3—SF: 3.7 m
4—San Diego: 3.7 m
5—Boston: 3.5 m
6—Portland: 2.1 m
7—NYC (Jersey City): 2 m
8—Dallas: 1.8 m
9—Philly: 1.4 m
10—Salt Lake: 1.1 m

At one point Jersey City floated rebuilding the old Jersey Central bridge from Newark via the Ironbound to tie the HBLR and Newark Subway together. It’s a good idea!

HBLR is unusable today with 2x an hour service and single tracking.

while we're at it nullify bergen local zoning and land use to ram through the hblr extension and manhattanize se bergen

Not sure. I think PATH is classed as Heavy Rail. HBLR, which is also in Jersey City, would be light rail though.

Major part of my transit wishlist: I'd love to see NYC embrace a regional map of 🚇 and 🚊 services.

NYC is part of a regional economy and community-- it would be a major win if commuters could visualize PATH, HBLR and Newark City subway alongside the NYC subway system.

I’m glad HBLR isn’t as inefficient as commuter rail, but 10% farebox recovery through some of the densest and most car-lite neighborhoods in America is really bad.

IBX light rail in NYC will be faster than the NYC subway, while HBLR is excruciatingly slow through most of downtown JC and around MLK Dr. The secret sauce? Grade separation!
This new speed is 31% faster than the previous estimates. The IBX will now average 26mph, faster than all NYC subway lines—and as fast as most express sections.

Meanwhile the actual urbanist suburb of Hoboken, NJ:
- Zero traffic deaths since 2017
- bike lanes and Citi Bike
- HBLR serves western Hoboken, leading to TOD
- has around 60K in an area that's just 2 square miles
- Hoboken Terminal is a hub for NJT rail, PATH HBLR, buses, and ferries

You could start by comparing development around PATH and HBLR in Jersey City.

@mikiesherrill.bsky.social Middle of the day HBLR experience: there is a West Side train approaching Exchange Place, but the timetable on screen says 7 mins away. The next train is 19 minutes away; maybe, maybe not? I invite you to commute to and from work using the HBLR to get my vote! #njtransit

Danforth Light Rail’s staircase is finally repaired and fully reopened, a needed fix that @hudcostreets.org has been calling for. NJ TRANSIT continues to make gradual improvements to HBLR service & stations.
July 7, 2026 at 5:48 PM
I think the HBLR numbers are mostly fake because farebox recovery is basically 0.
September 17, 2026 at 3:55 PM
And even if so, it (very quickly sketched in red) doesn't really touch population densities or destinations. It's just the idea we keep coming back to because... it's a thing that was once there.

Amping up the Pascack Valley/B&M services is a better idea. Ditto actually finishing the HBLR.

Begging HBLR to stagger trains better.
June 7, 2026 at 2:35 AM
My god, is that… It can’t be! That’s the HBLR to Newark Subway connection’s music!
