🇨🇳 China has finished phasing out #ozone-depleting HCFCs from its solvent industry. It’s the last stage of a project running since 2016 that forced 53 enterprises to move to substitutes. A nationwide ban on #HCFCs in cleaning agents took effect on 1 July 2026.

China finished phasing out ozone-depleting HCFCs. Since 2021, China has cut HFC-linked emissions by 759 million tons of CO2 equivalent — equal to 13% of the US annual greenhouse gas footprint, or the same as taking 175 million cars off the road for 1 year www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202609/15/...

4) Nitrous oxide is even more potent than methane and its atmospheric concentration has risen to 0.34 ppm. Agriculture and manure management are the largest anthropogenic sources of nitrous oxide. Other potent, long-lived greenhouse gases include SF6, CFCs, and HCFCs [all are welcome.]

Quiet Miracles #1: Canada nearly eliminated HCFCs, slashing use by 99.5% by 2020, with full phaseout by 2030.

As a Party to the Montreal Protocol, Canada reduced its consumption and production of HCFCs by 99.5% by 2020 and will phase them out completely by 2030, except

HCFCs used in deodorants, spray cans too. Those actively destroyed the ozone layer in the ~80s, got regulated globally and the damage could be reversed decades later. Protecting our environment is possible

How, oh how, shall we live without our CFCs and HCFCs?
If you're not using asbestos yet, you are being left behind. Everyone is using asbestos, there's no point in trying to fight it. Asbestos is the future.

By 2025 it was about 3.2W/m².
gml.noaa.gov/aggi/aggi.html

This is *despite* reductions in emissions over the years, because greenhouse gases go up in the atmosphere and it takes a very long time for them to go away.

Greenhouse gases are the dominant cause of this radiative forcing increase.

I'm trying to think of a man-made ecological disaster on the scale of the social disaster that is LLM proliferation. Exxon-Valdeze? Chernobyl? Maybe not widespread enough. DDTs and CFC/HCFCs seem more comparable.

None of the countries where the major corps that produced cfcs were, cared about anything until a viable replacement was on the table, and environmentalists forced the issue.

And cfcs, and hcfcs were still being produced and used for at least 2 decades after that, though in smaller amounts
