HF 3902 has bipartisan support bc the need for new homes and investment in communities is statewide.

We are now starting on #HF3895. We are having an “informational” hearing as it has already been referred to the next committee at introduction.

The Starter Homes Act did not pass the House Elections Finance & Government Operations Committee today. This is not the outcome we hoped for. But that doesn't mean the bill is done for the year. There is still a lot of session left, stay tuned for more to come on what’s next.

The #YesToHomes coalition has a strong turn out today from numerous partners across our coalition for #HF3895. The room is relatively full with people turning out to support more homes in Minnesota.

Rep Igo
“This bill will make a difference in our housing supply.”

“If you want your communities to have stable housing, this is a bill you should support”

This bill has had dozens of iterations and looked nationally, on Congress, talking to cities, talking to housing advocates.

Excellent primer on my personal pet peeve, bulk controls!

The Starter Home Act #HF3895 and #SF4123 allow each new home (up to 4/lot) to have three bedrooms (1500 sq ft). This would mean that cities get to choose how to get there, but would allow more family sized homes across the state.

"The proposal lays out a kind of menu of zoning and policy changes that cities can choose.... Options include increasing floor area ratios and building heights, allowing eight-unit buildings on a portion of land currently reserved for single-family homes, eliminating parking minimums..."
Minnesota Starter Homes Act Would Limit City Zoning Power
HF3895 would loosen local zoning to allow ADUs, townhouses and other starter‑home types while curbing some local design rules.

AFP - Ms Lee - in support of #HF3895

2/3rds support from constituents.

“My daughter cannot afford to move out” - door knocking story. roadblocks to ADUs from local governments. Homes are unaffordable.

Property rights and homeownership are central to the American dream.

The average first-time homebuyer in the US is 40 years old. A year ago, it was 38, it was 36 in 2022, 33 in 2020, and 28 in 1991.

We won't reverse this trend without action. Email your legislators & tell them to take that action and support the Starter Homes Act: actionnetwork.org/letters/star...

Making it easier, faster, cheaper to build more types of homes.

There are many cities doing creative work in this area. if one city is doing the work and their neighbors are not they will be swamped with the unmet demand from the region.
