The high five is a hand gesture whereby two people simultaneously raise one hand and slap the flat of their palm against the other.[2] The gesture is often preceded verbally by a phrase like "Give me five", "High five", or "Up top". Its meaning varies with the context of use but can include as a greeting, congratulations, or celebration. There are many origin stories of the high five,[3] but the first and two most documented candidates are Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke of the Los Angeles Dodgers professional baseball team on October 2, 1977, and Wiley Brown and Derek Smith of the Louisville Cardinals men's college basketball team during the 1978–1979 season.[4][5]

I was reminded of the surprisingly recent and debated history of the high five's origin, and found that the Wikipedia page for has a full four-panel diagram showing the "down low too slow" variant in the most 2008 photos possible.

I love that the high-five was codified into popular existence by either the LA Dodgers or the U of L men's basketball team, and while nobody knows for certain who was first, seems like everyone agrees Magic Johnson is probably full of it when he says it was him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_five
