Après 1997 Hong Kong était la seule région de Chine où commémorer le massacre de Tiananmen, discuter de réformes politiques ou organiser syndicats/partis politiques autonomes, et ce jusqu'en 2020 qd Pékin imposera la loi sécurité/NSL.
La HKAlliance a été dissoute en 2021 après 31 ans de célébration.
