Should have splurged for plating
Switching contexts - the assembled ISA-to-HSMC bridge boards arrived from JLCPCB. This will allow an Altera FPGA kit's HSMC port to talk to the bus using an over-spec'd cable for rapid prototyping. Previously I did this for PCI, hopefully this will offer the same flexibility.

With the core deployed on an Altera kit through the ISA-HSMC interposer, ZWS works fine, so I believe it is an electrical issue with the Gremlin HDMI. Last night I spent time probing it on the bus. It will be handy to have the original Gremlin up and running.

Altera's HSMC has 3 banks:
Bank 1 connects directly to gigabit transceivers, those can't be used as GPIO.
Banks 2 and 3 connect to standard FPGA I/O, some of which could be configured to be differential across paired pins.
I am using banks 2+3 as level-shifted standard I/O, and speaking ISA bus.

so the fpga on the left is an arria v gx starter - but it needs a way to connect to the motherboard that allows me to do PCI target functionality I can't do with Altera PCIe HIP - specifically, legacy i/o & memory reads/writes. so the board level shifts 5.0V PCI and bridges via a SamTec HSMC cable.
