What's it like being in a cult? What's it like being a cult leader? VICE traveled from Siberia's Taiga forest to visit Vissarion, a cult leader who looks like Jesus and claims to be the voice of God, to a commune that looks like a hippie farm on the surface but vibes like a cult obsessed with social media. Larger than perhaps any other cult, we dive into Happy Science, a controversial new religious movement with over 12 million members in 90 countries. Finally, we hop online to wrap our minds around Unicult, an all-online cult filled with millennials studying everything from crystals to aliens. And to quote Creed Bratton: "I've been involved in a number of cults, both as a leader and a follower. You have more fun as a follower, but you make more money as a leader." Japan’s Anime Cult That Claims Jesus Speaks Through Its Leader explores the rise of Happy Science, a controversial Japanese religious movement founded by Ryuho Okawa. This in-depth documentary investigates the group’s claims that its leader could channel Jesus Christ, Buddha, and even extraterrestrial beings — and how those messages were transformed into full-length anime films promoting apocalyptic prophecy and political ideology. From spirit channeling sessions to theatrical anime releases, from spiritual self-help messaging to the creation of a political party, this video breaks down how Happy Science built influence in Japan while remaining legally protected under religious freedom laws. We examine the psychology behind high-control groups, the role of media and animation in spreading belief, and what happened after the death of its founder in 2023. If you’re interested in cult documentaries, modern religious movements, Japanese politics, or the intersection of media and ideology, this deep dive reveals one of the strangest and least-discussed organizations operating today. #JapanCult #HappyScience #RyuhoOkawa #CultDocumentary #AnimeCult #JapaneseReligion #TrueCrimeDocumentary #ReligiousMovements #ApocalypseCult #InvestigativeDocumentary
