<div id="contentrecs"><p>BRIDGEPORT — A “remarkably rotund” and likely pregnant beaver is living, eating and knocking down trees around the Southwest Side— and environmental nonprofit Urban Rivers is looking to name it.</p><p>Lori Heavyfoot, Southside Large Marge, Dam Ryan, Sufjan Beavens and Sigourney Beaver are <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/1iqqs3l/this_huge_southside_beaver_needs_a_name/" rel="noreferrer noopener external" target="_blank">some top contenders suggested by people on Reddit</a>.</p><p>The beaver has been spotted along the Chicago River near Pilsen, Bridgeport and McKinley Park with its family, including an assumed mate and litter of children, said Urban Rivers’ Executive Director Nick Wesley and Volunteer Coordinator Stephen Meyer.</p><p>While the beaver is likely extra “spherical” because of its likely pregnancy, it’s been larger than average for longer than a beaver pregnancy lasts — which is typically two to three months, Meyer said. They look a little more agile. And this one, it’s just a beach ball and waddling around real slow.</p><p>“It feels like a deep-dish Bridgeport resident.”</p><p>Wesley’s plan is to take about 20 or so of his favorite potential names and run them by Urban Rivers’ volunteers and beaver researcher Sammie Clark for a vote, he said. The group has observed at least five or six beavers in that area, and it’s continuing to collect research on the semi-aquatic rodents and where they live in the river and city, he said.</p><p>The group has observed this particular family, with an abnormally globular beaver as its matriarch, on the South and West Sides for at least a year now, Wesley said. The beaver family been caught on tape by Urban Rivers’ various “camera traps,” a monitoring system the organization has been expanding in recent months — though they’ve likely been here longer, he said.</p><p>Beavers are “very territorial by family,” so they’ll stay together until one of them dies or until the kids peel off and find their own home base, Wesley said.</p><p>“There seems to be a South Side family around the Bubbly Creek area … near the Wild Mile, near Goose Island,” he said.</p><p>“We see them on the cameras quite a lot. They’ll show up in one of the spots probably every day, if not multiple times a day. On the South and West sides, they’re often around the islands built on Bubbly Creek.</p><p>“Sometimes they’ll come out in the day if they’re in a hurry and trying to get a ton of branches for some projects,” Wesley said. “But most of the time, it’s after sundown. So if you’re around at night and being real still and quiet, you can see them pass by on the ice.”</p><p>“We haven’t seen any beavers get taken out by coyotes yet,” Meyer said. “I don’t know how they survive.”</p><figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-imgur wp-block-embed-imgur"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> <blockquote class="imgur-embed-pub" data-id="a/updSAro" lang="en"><a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://imgur.com/a/updSAro" rel="external noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Coyotes near beaver family home</a></blockquote><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://s.imgur.com/min/embed.js"></script> </div></figure><p>Unlike their canine predators, beavers are herbivores, often gnawing on bark and twigs in the winter and soft plants in the summer.</p><p>In recent years, especially after the creation of the Wild Mile and its floating gardens, wildlife has begun to thrive around the Bubbly Creek area, which used to be known as an “open sewer,” famously written about by American muckracker Upton Sinclair in his 1906 novel, “The Jungle.”</p><p>Sincair “wrote at length about how disgusting this exact spot was and now, life’s come roaring back to that area,” Wesley said.</p><p>Around 2019 and 2020, <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://blockclubchicago.org/2019/04/26/design-for-wild-mile-on-chicago-river-unveiled-to-community/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">when environmental development really kicked off around the Wild Mile</a>, Urban Rivers volunteers didn’t notice beavers in the area, Meyer said.
