Stuffing is always a good plan unless it involves a turkey. However, it's best to layer, one row above another and then stick summat on the top - pansies or hellebores, which will flower until the Tulips barrel through in Spring. Tips from Gramps, channeling Donty Mon.

Yep, I know I should be researching cookers, and fridges, and washing machines, things we will shortly be without until we buy, but somehow tulips, cyclamen, hellebores, fragrant azaleas … you name it … appear to be far more interesting.
And now my iPad is almost out of battery. 😂🙄😳

My new hellebores arrived this week. And my tulips will go in as soon as I’ve planted the rose that’s on order. It’s going to be a busy November … I love it.

It will be fascinating to see how those 11 seedlings turn out next to the Hellebores.

Barbara asked I planted two hellebores at the end of summer. I’m afraid this past week of frigid temperatures has killed them. Their leaves are brown and laying on the ground. I …

May 2025 This reddish seed grown primrose really caught my eye and I was able to collect seeds from it. I'm hoping that it was pollinated by yellow flowering Primula elatior thinking that the cross might be interesting and lovely. I got 11 seedlings, now planted next to some Hellebores.

Hellebores were a great success in our French garden which was a huge surprise. I can’t wait to begin building up a collection again. Spring bulbs will go in pots for this year to allow us to work at developing the garden over the winter. So exciting!

“The cultivation of ornamental flowers. Winter giving way to hellebores, lilac, iris, rose. We say: ooh. Ahh. Crouching. No one says this is unnecessary.

Some flowers are all the more beautiful for appearing when we least expect them. 🤍

The Christmas rose (*Helleborus niger*) brings delicate white blooms to the depths of winter, when the garden needs them most.

We planted our garden to bloom from late Feb to 1st frost whenever that comes, from early bulbs, Hellebores, Pulmonarias, etc. to late-blooming asters & annuals that hold on as long as weather does so that we always have food for #pollinators since we live in big city surrounded by lawns & concrete.

Plants vary greatly in how readily they will cross. Some garden plants, like hellebores and aquilegias are notorious for crossing and if you grow several varieties together, any seed you collect is fairly likely to result in some surprising seedlings.

Garden notes:

One of my hellebores flowered in July; the other didn’t survive the summer heat. Lilies and dahlias failed to flower, presumably due to heat stress. This week I have a very late flowering of plume thistles, and spring anemones sprouting in the flower bed.

Hellebores come in some of the loveliest colors. I'm fond of the very black ones but don't see them often.

SAFETY CHECK

Some seeds can be toxic. Often the toxicity is only an issue if they’re ingested but there are a few, like hellebores, where you’re advised to wear gloves when handling the seeds.

Verbena Boniansis worked very well in Indre, we had very dry summers and wet winters but it never let us down. We had a lot of Hellebores around a willow and they did very well which was a surprise. The shrub version of Hypericum also did well ( Rose of Sharon ) . Eriginion also coped well
