A new find for me, a clump of Crested Coral Fungus parasitised by Helminthosphaeria clavariorum, giving it a strangely burnt appearance

More fungi on fungi! I found these gorgeous white coral fungi (Clavulina coralloides) on the forest floor with the mosses; then I noticed that some were turning blue-gray from their base: this is the parasitic Ascomycete Helminthosphaeria clavariarum... #fungi #mushrooms #ecology #NaturePhotography

A fun find from yesterday. I think this is the real Clavulina cinerea rather than a Helminthosphaeria clavariarum infection on C. coralloides which is often mistaken for being a different spcies. It's actually grey skinned rather than having black mold on it.

The forest gods have Clavulina cristata eyebrows? I wonder if they get Helminthosphaeria clavariarum infections? Turns the fungus black with little bumps on them (perithecia).

*immediately plans expedition to bisect a forest god's eyebrows and do microscopy on them.

Coral Fungus (Helminthosphaeria clavariarum) thrives underground in winter, its secret networks rewriting survival rules. Could these hidden interactions redefine how we see soil ecosystems? #FungiExplained #Mycology
