As for "Anglo-Saxon" as an ethnicity: my brother in Christ, have you heard of the Heptarchy? Have you heard of the Danelaw? Fuckssake, in the 6th Century Herefordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire were still essentially in Wales.

I don't know, I just feel like being a healthy solvent self employed person with no criminal record who speaks excellent English should count for more than knowing the seven kingdoms of the Heptarchy.

I do love how intermittently someone will go 'we need devolved units that mean something...like the heptarchy!' I mean, why stop there? Why don't we rename England 'Locrinus'?
The Heptarchy, and I cannot stress this enough, was not real. There is no period in Anglo-Saxon history when there were only seven kingdoms and if there had been, it wouldn't have been the seven people usually list.

The Heptarchy, and I cannot stress this enough, was not real. There is no period in Anglo-Saxon history when there were only seven kingdoms and if there had been, it wouldn't have been the seven people usually list.

As I identify in the piece - England is a country of very localised and very distinctive regions. Essentially it's a heptarchy to its very rock. That's why so many of us identify ourselves by the counties or regions we come from.
