“Portrait d’une jeune fille en noir” (Portrait of a Girl in Black) by André Derain (French) - Oil on canvas / 1913–1914 - The State Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg, Russia) #WomenInArt #HermitageMuseum #StateHermitageMuseum #AndreDerain #Derain #AndréDerain #arte #art #artText #PortraitofaGirl
Made in 1913–1914, this portrait reflects French artist André Derain’s move away from the high-key color of early Fauvism toward a quieter, more austere seriousness with dark tones, elongated forms, and a deliberate sense of “severity” that critics often linked to a Gothic mood. A nearly empty background refuses anecdote with no home, no street, and no props … just a young woman’s presence, dignified and self-contained. She sits upright on a rounded wooden chair, centered against a wide, cool blue-gray background. Her skin is medium-brown, softly modeled with visible brushwork like warm blush at the cheeks, a long straight nose, and slightly downturned lips that keep her expression peaceful but muted. Her gaze drifts just past ours rather than meeting us directly. Her black hair is parted and smoothed close to the head, gathered into neat side coils at the ears. She wears a high-necked black dress with a faint floral pattern, its dark fabric absorbing light, and a broad white lace collar that fans across her shoulders like a delicate, scalloped shield. Her posture is closed: arms folded across her lap, one hand resting over the other, wrists relaxed but held close. Behind her head, the chair’s striped back (muted reds, creams, and greens) frames her like an arch, and a pale pink seat cushion peeks from the left side. The paint surface stays intentionally plain with edges simplified, shadows restrained, so her face and hands feel weighty and still, as if she is holding a long pose with practiced patience. This painting also carries a major collecting history: it entered Sergei Shchukin’s Moscow collection via the Paris dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, then passed through the state museums formed after 1917 before arriving at the Hermitage. In that long journey, the sitter remains unnamed, but not generalized as the crisp lace, folded arms, and steady near-sidelong gaze insist on individuality. She is seen not as decoration, but as a person with a real life.

“Боярышня в кокошнике (Girl in Kokoshnik)” by Sofya Junker-Kramskaya (Russian) - Oil on canvas / c. 1905 - State Hermitage Museum (St Petersburg, Russia) #WomenInArt #SofyaJunkerKramskaya #СофьяЮнкерКрамская #WomanArtist #Hermitage #HermitageMuseum #Kokoshnik #art #artText #WomensArt #WomenArtists
A young woman, likely a noblewoman or idealized “boyar girl,” is shown from the waist up, seated at an angle and turning her face toward us. Her skin is light with a warm flush across the cheeks, and her dark eyes and brows are softly focused rather than confrontational. She wears a tall, rounded kokoshnik headdress covered in pearl beads and jewel decorations, with a sheer white veil falling around her head and shoulders. Long strands of beads frame her face like a curtain. Her dress is white and luminous, painted with delicate, translucent layers. The bodice is studded with small, colorful gem-like accents and a vertical row of reflective buttons. At her cuffs, more beadwork and sparkle catch the light. Her forearms rest on a ledge in the lower right, hands relaxed and partly cropped by the frame. The background is a pale gray-white field with faint vertical strokes, keeping the attention on the woman’s calm expression and the intricate textures of pearls, fabric, and light. Light is handled gently rather than dramatically so highlights skim the pearls and the veil, while the face is has soft transitions. The overall palette stays cool and restrained with whites, silvers, and muted greens so the small reds and brighter greens of the ornament hit like quiet points of music. Paintings like this draw on the late-Imperial fascination with “Old Russia,” where costume becomes a kind of time machine like the kokoshnik and veil signaling tradition and rank, while the her gaze feels modern and intimate. It presents an unidentified model as an emblem of heritage who is carefully adorned, yet rendered with warmth rather than pageantry. The Russian artist, Sofya Ivanovna Junker-Kramskaya (Софья Ивановна Юнкер-Крамская), worked within a realist portrait culture shaped by her father, Ivan Kramskoy, who wrote that his daughter was “beginning to give me serious hopes.” Here, historical dress becomes identity-work to depict womanhood staged between public role and private life.

Portrait of Princess Zinaida Nikolaevna Yusupova (Портрет княгини Зинаиды Николаевны Юсуповой) by François Flameng (French) - Oil on canvas / 1894 - Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg, Russia) #womeninart #oilpainting #portraitofawoman #princess #HermitageMuseum #FrançoisFlameng #womensart #royalty
French artist François Flameng completed at least two portraits of Russian princess Zinaida Yusupova including this oil painting of her wearing a sumptuous dress decorated with the famous La Pelegrina pearl, which once belonged to King Philip II of Spain. It was painted in 1894 when Tsar Alexander III invited the artist to Gatchina Palace to create portraits of members of the Imperial Court and other aristocrats. The beautiful princess wears a pale pink, satin gown with intricate lace detailing on the bodice and sleeves. A large, light-colored stole, trimmed with fur, drapes over her shoulders. She has on long, light-brown gloves, and her jewelry includes pearl drop earrings and a long pearl necklace with the famous black pearl pendant. A gold sash is visible near her waist. She has black hair styled in an updo, fair skin, and piecing dark eyes. Zinaida sits in an ornate, gilded chair, which is partially visible. The chair adds to the sense of wealth and elegance while the background is richly painted with a deep red curtain and a dark brown marble column. The artist’s skill is evident in the rendering of the fabrics and the woman’s likeness to portray sophistication, wealth, and quiet dignity. Princess Zinaida Nikolaevna Yusupova (Зинаи́да Никола́евна Юсу́пова) was a Russian noblewoman, the only heiress of Russia's largest private fortune of her time. Famed for her beauty, the lavishness of her hospitality, and her extensive charity, she was a leading figure in pre-Revolutionary Russian society. In 1882, she married Count Felix Felixovich Sumarokov-Elston, who served briefly as General Governor of Moscow Military District. Zinaida is probably best known as the mother of Prince Felix Yusupov, the killer of mystic Grigori Rasputin. In April of 1919, she left Russia and spent her remaining years living in exile in Italy and France before passing away in 1939.

Portrait of Madame Trabuc by Vincent Van Gogh (Dutch) - Oil on canvas mounted on panel / 1889 - State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia) #womeninart #vangogh #art #oilpainting #VincentVanGogh #portraitofawoman #artwork #fineart #womensart #hermitagemuseum #DutchArtist #impressionism #bskyart
In September of 1889, while at the asylum in Saint-Remy, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh painted a few portraits. One of the portraits is of Jeanne Lafuye Trabuc who was married to Francois Trabuc, the chief orderly at Saint-Paul. She was 55 years old when the artist painted her portrait. Van Gogh described Madame Trabuc in a September 7th letter to his brother Theo, “She is a woman whose looks have faded, a poor soul, resigned to her fate, nothing out of the ordinary and so insignificant that I simply long to paint that dusty blade of grass. I talked to her sometimes when I was doing some olive trees behind their little house, and she told me then that she didn’t believe I was ill – in fact, you would now say the same if you saw me working, my mind clear and my fingers so sure that I drew that Pieta by Delacroix without taking a single measurement, though there are those four hands and arms in the foreground – gestures and postures that are not exactly easy or simple.” Upon completing the painting of Jeanne, Van Gogh wrote to his sister, Wilhelmina, on September 19, 1889 saying, “The other day I finished the portrait of a woman upward of forty years old, an insignificant woman. The withered face is tired, pockmarked – a sunburned, olive-coloured complexion, black hair. A faded black dress relieved by a geranium of a delicate pink, and the background in a neutral tone, between pink and green.” Another letter was written on September 19, 1889, this one to his parents expressing his fondness of portrait painting, “As often as I have the chance, I work at portraits, which I myself sometimes think are better and more serious than the rest of my work. And if it might happen that my condition allows me to go back to Paris or its vicinity, that will probably be the important thing for me.”

Portrait of Princess Maria G. Rayevskaya, née Gagarina by Ivan Makarov / Ива́н Мака́ров (Russian) - Oil on canvas / c. 1876-1884 - Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg, Russia) #womeninart #art #portrait #RussianArt #portraitofawoman #IvanMakarov #HermitageMuseum #fineart #oilpanting #womensart #fashion
Princess Maria Grigoryevna Rayevskaya, née Gagarina (Портрет Марии Григорьевны Раевской, урожденной княжны Гагариной ) was the daughter of Grigory Grigoryevich Gagarin and Sophia Andreyevna, née Dashkova. She married Mikhail Nikolayevich Rayevsky. Before this painting, she was a maid-of-honour at the imperial court in 1869 as well as a member of the Order of St. Catherine. In this formal elegant portrait, the princess stands in front of a muted brown and green outdoor setting as she looks directly at us in a stunning hip-hugging purple velvet and satin dress with gold lace ruffles and trim around the neckline and sleeves. On her right hand, with a gold ring and gold bracelet, rests in front of her she loosely holds the tip of a folded fancy gold fan. Her dark brown coiffed hair, with a small gold floral hairpiece, is tight in an updo that lets her beauty and face appear unblemished. Ivan Kuzmich Makarov (Ива́н Кузьми́ч Мака́ров) was a Russian portrait painter who studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg under famous historical painter Alexey Markov. He chose portraiture as his speciality, eventually winning the patronage of the Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna.

Portrait of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (Charlotte of Prussia) by А. Malyukov (Russian) - Oil on canvas - 1836 - Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia) #womeninart #portrait #art #hermitagemuseum #fineart #portraitofawoman #oilpainting #russianart #womensart #princess #empress #artwork #bskyart
In this 1836 painting by a little known artist, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna formally sits for an official portrait wearing an elaborately-embroidered burnt gold-colored Russian court dress with a tall ornate crimson kokoshnik headdress and a long sheer veil. Her wrists, ears and neck are adorned with heavy, large emerald and pearl jewelry. Her auburn hair is pulled tight under the large hat while her clear complexion has light hints of rouge. She avoids our direct gaze by staring intently to her left. The Empress was born Princess Charlotte of Prussia, and was the eldest daughter of King Frederick William III of Prussia. In 1817, She married Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. A famous variant after this painting was completed by German artist Franz Krüger between 1852-1857 and can be seen at the Russian State Historical Museum in Moscow.
