inostrancevia was named in 1922, with the type species i. alexanderi being known from exceptionally complete fossils. they were discovered by vladimir amalitsky and anna petrovna, a married couple of palaeontologists who began excavation of the fossils in 1899 in northern dvina

inostrancevia alexanderi was named after the geologist alexander inostrancev, one of vladimir’s mentors. the 1922 paper does not go into depth describing the specimens, as vladimir had planned to do further research prior to his death – a 1927 paper by pravoslavlev describes the fossils in detail

along with inostrancevia alexanderi, viatkogorgon is represented by some of the most complete gorgonopsian material in the fossil record, so its relevance to our understanding of their biology cannot be overstated

the i. africana paratype has a skull length of 48cm, indicating that it had a similar body size to i. alexanderi, which has a skull length of 50cm. this would also put the species on par with the largest specimens of rubidgea, but not as large as i. latifrons, whose skull was 60cm in length

sadly, vladimir died in 1917 due to heart failure, and his findings – including the naming and description of i. alexanderi – would not be published until 1922, mostly as a result of the political turmoil and upheaval in russia during this time period

pravoslavlev’s paper also describes a second species of inostrancevia, i. latifrons, which was found in the same locality as i. alexanderi, but the incomplete remains suggest that it was significantly larger than the type species

At #basees2024 I will be talking about #AlexanderI of Russia and how he used his art gallery to encapsulate the idea of Russia as both cultural and military power, as victor in the upheaval of the early nineteenth century – not through words but through the way art was presented.
When art is not only about art, but about politics and propaganda. In the 21st century, politicians pose beneath famous paintings (Ivanov’s Christ Appearing to the People) that resonate with their target public to identify the Russian public with the ‘chosen people’ #memorymakers #politicsofthepast
