Homie is short for homeboy, a compound of the words "home" and "boy". The earliest known use of the term was in 1847 by W. E. Heygate. The term's meaning was originally to refer to a boy who was loyal to his hometown or a homebody
we all got that one homie who loves etymology

This used to be the Heygate estate where I’d go for Girls Brigade 😬

Just over a decade after Elephant and Castle's Heygate estate was demolished, Brutalist buildings have become some of the most in-demand places to live in London. So what did we lose when we lost Tim Tinker's concrete behemoth?

Surprised and happy at Green advances in Southwark - including lots of impressively close second places. Southwark Labour has many good people but has done some wretched things in office - bungling the Heygate sale inter alia.

John Heygate's Talking Pictures is a lively account of making three films (German, French, and English) in parallel at the legendary UfA studios in the early 1930s. It's a bit less lighthearted, though, when you know that Heygate later flew a Nazi flag from his car.

Read somewhere fwiw that Pamela leaving Widmerpool was based on Evelyn Waugh’s wife (also Evelyn) leaving him for a man named John Heygate. Quite a scandal. #anthonypowelltogether

It doesn't "risk" anything. This is what the "regeneration" of Elephant and Castle was always supposed to be: the demolition of the Heygate and Avebury Estates to make way for the (mostly white) professional managerial class. This isn't even new. It's just recent.

Finished the first book of my #OcTBR pile: The Book of English Magic. This has been in the TBR pile for some time (since about 2010, I think!). I enjoyed it fine, but I think I was expecting a more academic history than this turned out to be.
