Castell Henllys Iron Age Village, Pembrokeshire, Wales, is beautifully situated in fine wooded countryside; from a distance, it gives the impression that ancient folk still live here and that we’re somehow intruding on their privacy.

The fort, built 1700 BC sits on a hilltop, 250m above sea level. It is built largely without mortar.

Over 600 suspected house platforms have been identified at Brusselstown Ring hillfort in County Wicklow, marking it as the largest known prehistoric nucleated settlement in Britain and Ireland. doi.org/hbhgtd

In a recent study published in Antiquity, Dr. Dirk Brandherm and his colleagues identified more than 600 suspected house platforms in the Brusselstown Ring hillfort, making it the largest nucleated settlement ever discovered in the entirety of prehistoric Britain and Ireland thus far.

Maiden Castle is one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe. It would once have been densely populated.
It’s now owned by English Heritage and is a lovely place to walk around, with views over #Dorchester, #Poundbury and the Hardy Monument.

Pisamalahti hillfort is an Iron Age site above the Lake Saimaa in Finland. It has steep slopes to three directions so it needed built defence only in the east. There are still remains of a stone foundation, 3 metres wide and 2 metres high, of a wooden palisade. #HillfortWednesday
