Gosh, I miss histrom covers like this one.
I love histrom. I've written histrom. My histrom hasn't sold nearly as well as my contemporary.
I'm very much a "write what you want to write and damn the market person," but I was flat out told in 2015 that no publisher would buy histrom that wasn't set in the Regency or Victorian periods.

It shouldn't be. Romance is a massive genre, and histrom is a big part of that. There are a metric ton of cishet white women writing M/M histrom. That queer men of color are being excluded or discouraged from this category is a problem publishing should be addressing.

Maybe it’s to my benefit that I came to histrom later in my reading journey and have a metric ton of backlist titles to work through for a great many authors, given that publishers are now pivoting away from histroms and trad pubbed histrom authors are going indie or moving to other genres.

but yes, absolutely, two of my favorite prose stylists in histrom, and both of them love an unlikely combination and a bonkers plot (though Kinsale more so, on that count)

And I get that you can want more of something that the market isn't giving you. I'm not accusing the person of hypocrisy exactly. But we ended up in a lull with histrom at least partially because of readers. And if histrom is going to revive, it'll happen at least partially because of readers.
