It took about 500 years of this escalation to stop them.
The lesson from this was that less extreme punishment made law enforcement easier, and weapon use go down.

Perplexed that a link to this piece that I wrote for #HistoryNet several years ago ended up in my inbox this AM.

It's a good primer about #Gellhorn, nevertheless. @pstnyc.bsky.social #WomensHistoryMonth historynet.com/martha-gellh...

John Dean became the “desk officer” for the Watergate cover-up, coordinating hush money payments and destruction of evidence.

He pleaded guilty to obstruction.

Realizing he was being set up as a scapegoat, Dean began cooperating with investigators in April 1973.

He helped cover up Watergate, then he blew the whistle on it. Fifty years after the scandal that brought down Nixon, a key player speaks out to HistoryNet.
What did president Nixon know and when did he know it? Forty years ago, in the summer of 1973, a little-known 34-year-old White House counsel, John W.

I won't mince words here, what happened to HistoryNet still bothers me so much.

I read so many of those magazines from the very first issue... and to see them destroyed by a private equity firm is just so fucking disgusting.
