#Hiveworks
why are all my webcomics rss feeds breaking lately, did hiveworks do something or what

So is Hiveworks in general just... breaking down?

I just noticed two more of my comic RSS subscriptions are broken. (El Goonish Shive, now Johnny Wander and Wilde Life are broken.)

I feel like it's worth mentioning re: Hiveworks that Erin Burt, the developer behind the open source Hiveworks associated CMS ComicControl, never did respond to me about or fix the vulnerabilities I found in her software.

Probably don't trust her if she ever publishes comics related software again.

It would appear that a bunch of webcomics that were(are?) on Hiveworks now have broken RSSes (e.g. empty or get 500 replies). (All of them have the Hiveworks ring widget.)

Honestly thank you for this post because l knew about the hiveworks stuff but i did not know about the connection with Crow Time. :((((

I didn't even say anything about the crow lady and she blocked me for supporting artists that were affected by the Hiveworks bullshit.
October 28, 2026 at 6:46 PM
She didn't pull her website down btw, the skeleton crew running Hiveworks did.

As long as it's still vulnerable it needs to stay down.

So like, updates to the software for the broader public are (supposed to be) done via comicctrl.com. While that site is hosted on Hiveworks' servers, Hiveworks doesn't seem able to access those mechanisms.

There's nothing stopping them from making changes to individual ComicControl builds, though.
Fwiw Hiveworks has always justified not maintaining the code as it belongs to Erin and they can’t. Which did not stop them from adding support to it for using Hyvor as a comment platform many years after Erin had left.

Wow, I had heard of the downfall of Hiveworks but I didn't know the details (or that the crowtime person was part of it). That really sucks.

lrb as a former hiveworks fan every time someone reposts the crow comics i wince LOL. the internet may have collectively forgotten but i sure didn't. after reading the statement it was very, very hard to forget

And caught up on Sleepless Domain, and of course… hiatus. 🤭
So on to the next comic. Hiveworks is a great place to find online comics.

Additionally, Erin owns the public ComicControl repo on GitHub. So it's forkable, and you can make changes to individual builds, but ACTUALLY maintaining it and doing updates for everybody can only be done by Erin.

This particular thing really is on Erin, not Hiveworks.

When I was talking to the current tech about the situation, I was told they'd have to INDIVIDUALLY update every single Hiveworks site still using ComicControl in order to patch the vulnerability.

It's very likely that's what they did in order to add Hyvor support. That's not really "maintaining".

I'm not even sure webcomic artists should be on board with this either. The memory of the Hiveworks scandal should be looming, on top of what happened with Tapas. And people publish comics through itch as well, and we all know what happened there.

if you're on comiccontrol... that's a different story, and a lot more complicated, cus it hasn't kept up with php. former/current hiveworks people need to be conversing on this cus you will be vulnerable

Researching various professional organizations today for the #CreativesUnion thing and, interestingly, there are a couple for webcomics people, which is quite cool.

Also, the webcomic space is kind of a mess: Hiveworks is a basketcase, Tapas is dead, and Webtoon is a corporate AI hellspace.

Several of the ones I follow use hiveworks

When Hiveworks fell apart, I decided not to put G-ads back on Slightly Damned's site despite losing up to $100/month in income. As someone who grew up in the "wild west" of the late 90s/00s internet, I'm so sick of corpos ruining shit

May we all be able to thrive without third party ads one day.

Thanks, @trinitysilph.bsky.social !!!

We actually have a formal statement against Hiveworks posted on our site and have pulled all references endorsing Hiveworks that we are aware of from the rest of the site. Any previous mentions outside of our organization do not reflect our official stance.

Truthfully

I can help but think of things like Keenspot and Hiveworks in the wake of this. 😕

cartoonist.coop/hiveworks-gu...

Well, they kind of screwed over most of the people that put their comics on the site. The person who was the main line of communication was incapable of behaving like an adult, and from my understanding have shut down.

The age of the webcomic seems to be past, at least for now, but maybe if social media atomizes somehow we can get back to webrings or small online pub-houses. I know a few, like Kemono Cafe, & everybody knows Hiveworks. With search engines shitting the bed, word of mouth is more important than ever.
