If you do go to Hamilton the gardens are quite genuinely world class and you’re also within striking distance of Hobbiton (unbelievably good esp. if you’re a LoTR fan) and Maungatautari (Sanctuary Mountain) which is your only chance to be within cooee of living Kakapo on the mainland

First day on the road in the North Island. Drive to Matamata in the rental. A beautiful lodge on the outskirts. Shame the weather was so poor today. A catch up with a TA cycling buddy as well. Hobbiton tour tomorrow

I can attest to @erikaishii.bsky.social's joy at visiting Hobbiton in NZ. It is truly a wonderful place. Walking through the cutting from the visitor centre, I genuinely choked up and got tearful.
